Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- If rookie LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers are going to make the playoffs, games like this are perfect preparation. James scored eight of his 19 points in the fourth quarter, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:22 play that lifted the Cavaliers to an 88-85 victory over the New Orleans Hornets. "The game had a playoff-like atmosphere," Cavaliers coach Paul Silas said. "We battled and they battled. I'm proud that our team hung tough because our guys have never experienced that type of atmosphere." Led by the 19-year-old James, the Cavaliers are trying to make the playoffs for the first time in six years. Three of their top six players have less than two years in the NBA and very few have experienced winning in the postseason. Young, inexperienced teams are supposed to fold in close games on the road, but the Cavaliers hung tough in this one, picking up their sixth win in eight games. After two free throws by Jamal Mashburn gave the Hornets an 83-81 lead, Jeff McInnis ran down a deflection in the backcourt, dribbled into the frontcourt and whipped a pass to James, whose jumper from the left corner gave Cleveland the lead for good. "By far, one of the biggest shots I've made," said James, who played through some late foul trouble. "It was clutch. We were down by two and I just shot it with confidence. It was a playoff atmosphere tonight and we were just able to come through." "LeBron James stepped up and made a big shot for them late," Hornets coach Tim Floyd said. "He plays with a lot of confidence." Mashburn threw away a pass and Eric Williams buried a jumper for an 86-83 edge with 47 seconds to go. After a follow shot by David West made it a one-point game, second-year forward Carlos Boozer calmly sank two free throws with 6.1 seconds left. The Cavaliers had been just 9-of-19 from the line. "Two big free throws there at the end of the game ... hey, that's what it's about," Silas said. "They haven't been in it before, but we keep telling them what it's about." Mashburn missed a 3-pointer, giving Cleveland its third straight win over New Orleans. Boozer had 18 points and eight rebounds, Williams added 15 and 11 and Tony Battie 12, nine and four blocks for the Cavaliers (26-36), who tied Miami and Toronto for eighth place in the Eastern Conference. The top eight teams make the playoffs. "We're right there with this thing," Silas said. "Toronto lost tonight, and we're all bunched up. Anything can happen if we keep winning." "We've got players that will sacrifice anything to get a win, including me," James said. "We've been able to do that and turn things around." Baron Davis scored 26 points and Mashburn added 21 and 10 rebounds for the Hornets, who have lost three of their last four games. "They stayed solid. They made the plays when they had to," Hornets forward P.J. Brown said. "This one doesn't feel very good." James left with his fourth foul late in the third quarter, but Cleveland put together a surge that provided a 68-62 lead entering the final period. He returned to make a 3-pointer for a 75-68 advantage with 8:22 to go. Davis scored seven points in less than 90 seconds before a dunk by Jamaal Magloire pulled New Orleans into a 77-77 tie with 5:20 to play. Battie made a jumper and blocked a shot that led to a running banker by James for an 81-77 lead, but Mashburn made four free throws around a jumper to give the Hornets an 83-81 edge with 1:43 left. "We are getting there, but we're not there yet," Silas said. "I'm just elated that they came with it and hung in there. It was unbelievable."
