Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Thanks to Jermaine O'Neal and Ron Artest, the Indiana Pacers could lose their final 20 games and still make the postseason. O'Neal collected 30 points and 10 rebounds and fellow All-Star Artest scored eight of his 17 points in the fourth quarter as the Pacers defeated the Utah Jazz, 96-88, to become the first team to clinch a playoff berth. It is the seventh consecutive season and 14th in 15 campaigns that the Pacers (46-16) will play in the postseason. They have the longest current playoff streak of any team in the Eastern Conference. The game was tied, 86-86, before Artest made a tough bank shot in traffic with 3:25 left, then spun around Utah All-Star and fellow defensive stalwart Andrei Kirilenko for a layup to open a four-point cushion with 2:36 to play. "I wasn't consistent defensively like previous games, especially in the last two minutes," Kirilenko said. "We can't - especially in the last two minutes - let them make so many easy layups." "Both guys (O'Neal and Artest) stepped up huge," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "Ronny made a couple of huge shots, one with Kirilenko guarding, so you know it's a tough shot." O'Neal was impressed with the late-game performance of Artest, who was playing his third game after coming back form thumb surgery. "That's what he's been giving us all year - that's why he's an All-Star," O'Neal said. "He has a lot of size, he can hurt you from the outside, he can hurt you from the inside, he can put it on the floor. We like that matchup tonight. Kirilenko's obviously a great defender, but we like Artest's size against him." Jazz coach Jerry Sloan took responsibility for the defeat. "Obviously, we just let them walk in the paint and turn around and shoot in your face," Sloan said. "I made a bad (defensive) matchup for us, so we had a bad matchup that wasn't very good." Following a steal by Artest, Reggie Miller - as he has done countless times in his Hall of Fame career - nailed a 3-pointer from three feet behind the arc to make it 93-86 with 24 seconds left. Miller scored 16 points and made 4-of-7 3-pointers to help the Pacers improve to 3-0 on a four-game Western Conference road trip. "This is the first time all year we've had everyone healthy," Miller said. "We're getting a big lift from everyone." Kirilenko had 19 points and nine rebounds and Raja Bell added 17 points off the bench for the Jazz, who had a season high-tying four-game winning streak snapped. Indiana held a 57-44 halftime lead and led by as many as 15 points in the third quarter before Utah made a second-half run, taking an 81-80 lead on a dunk by Kirilenko midway through the fourth quarter. "Eventually, we knew we were going to step it back up," Artest said. "For a period of time, we just let them hang in there and even take the lead. Things like that can't happen. It's a tough league, but we hung in there."
