Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The surging Memphis Grizzlies inched closer to the first winning season in franchise history as James Posey scored 16 points in a 98-92 triumph over the Los Angeles Clippers. The Grizzlies (38-24), who appear headed to the playoffs for the first time, moved a franchise-best 14 games over .500 and need only four more victories to clinch a winning season. Memphis took control in the fourth quarter and has won four straight and nine of its last 11 games. Posey credited coach Hubie Brown for the Grizzlies' sudden success. Last season, they won just 28 games, which had been a franchise record. "I've been learning since the day coach Brown got here," Posey said. "He's doing a great job as a teacher and breaking the game down as far as each player is concerned." Shane Battier's follow shot capped an 11-3 spurt that gave the Grizzlies a 91-78 lead with 4:51 left. The Clippers got no closer than six thereafter and have lost four in a row. Pau Gasol, Jason Williams and former Clipper Bo Outlaw each scored 13 points for the Grizzlies. Outlaw also grabbed 11 rebounds. "We have a bunch of team guys here," Battier said. "It's a great system for the players we have here. We don't have just jump shooters or post players; we have players who make basketball plays." Corey Maggette and Elton Brand scored 18 points apiece for Los Angeles, which also has dropped three straight at home. "This loss was frustrating," Maggette said. "They were getting rebounds, some sneaky baskets. This is a team we should have beat. We shouldn't have lost this game." Trailing 52-49 at halftime, the Grizzlies outscored the Clippers, 24-19, in the third quarter to take a two-point lead into the final period. "Our second group turned the game around," Brown said. "For eight minutes, four at the end of the third quarter and four to start the fourth quarter, they were suffocating. I thought our bench did a fantastic job defensively during that stretch." Battier's 3-pointer and a reverse layup by Outlaw gave the Grizzlies an 87-76 cushion with 8:16 to play. "When I come off the bench, I try to bring some energy and hustle. We all do," Outlaw said. "It's a game-by-game thing. Some nights, the starters are feeling it and don't need help. Other games, it helps to have that spark off the bench."
