Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Zach Randolph was suspended, and so was the playoff push of the Portland Trail Blazers. With Randolph serving a one-game ban, the Trail Blazers were held to a season low total in a 91-71 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, who snapped a four-game losing streak. Randolph, who leads Portland in scoring and rebounding, fueled a 91-70 home victory over Utah on Saturday but was involved in a fourth-quarter altercation that drew a suspension from the NBA. An effective low-post presence, Randolph also helps his team's suspect perimeter game by drawing double-teams. Without their best player, the Trail Blazers shot less than 36 percent (30-of-84) from the field and attempted just 12 free throws. "Zach gives us that extra bounce," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "We didn't have that tonight." "Some nights you are not going to have it, even though we need that person," said guard Damon Stoudamire, who made just 1-of-9 shots. "It's apparent to everyone that we have a lack of depth. That hurts is games like that." Former Clippers Darius Miles (24 points) and Derek Anderson (22) accounted for most of the points for Portland, which also scored 71 points at Detroit on New Year's Eve. "It probably would have been a better game with Zach in there," Miles said. The Trail Blazers (30-33) remained 2 1/2 games behind eighth-place Denver (33-31) in the race for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. It has not missed the postseason since 1982. "Zach is a big part of this team," said Portland forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who scored 13 points on just 6-of-17 shooting. "We're kind of painting ourselves into a tough spot." Elton Brand also took advantage of Randolph's absence to collect 21 points and 14 rebounds for the Clippers, who led by as many as 23 points and won for just the fourth time in 15 games. "Without (Randolph) in there, we had a tough time covering Elton Brand," Cheeks said. Los Angeles took the lead for good late in the first quarter and used a 10-4 run to close the first half and open a 50-41 advantage. Portland shot 45 percent in the first half but went cold in the third quarter, making just 5-of-22 shots and managing just one basket in a six-minute stretch. During that stretch, the Clippers extended to 69-47 on a 3-pointer by Keyon Dooling with 3:46 to go. The Trail Blazers got no closer than 13 points thereafter. "Once we had that nine-point lead at halftime, we wanted to come out in the first five minutes of the second half and build on it," Brand said.
