Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Shaquille O'Neal overshadowed the absences of Kobe Bryant and Jason Kidd and overwhelmed the New Jersey Nets. O'Neal scored 32 points as the Lakers rallied for a 94-88 victory over the Nets, their 10th in 12 games. The nationally televised matchup of the teams that met in the 2002 NBA Finals lost some of its luster when Bryant re-injured his shoulder on Friday night and Kidd chose to rest his bruised knee. O'Neal provided most of the star quality, making 11-of-19 shots as he overpowered Nets center Jason Collins and forwards Aaron Williams and Rodney Rogers. "They were kind of undermatched against us," O'Neal said. "They had a lot of 6-7, 6-8 guys trying to play center." "I was trying," Rogers said. "It's tough to guard him. We just try to keep him out of the lane as much as possible." In the third quarter, O'Neal tried to grab a rebound on the run and went careening into the expensive seats, diving over a fan and rolling on the floor. He was unhurt and joked about it afterward. "Actually, I was running and getting ready to take out the two people that were there," he said. "But there was an old lady there. I couldn't take her out, so I had to jump over." Despite their difficulty in defending O'Neal, the Nets held a 72-71 lead early in the fourth quarter before going cold, managing just two dunks over the next seven minutes as the Lakers opened an 85-77 lead. Gary Payton had 18 points and nine assists for the Lakers, who trounced the Nets in New Jersey a week ago with Bryant and Kidd on the floor. This one was much closer, with 19 lead changes and 15 ties. "I can raise my arm up; it just hurts a lot when I do it," said Bryant, who will not go on the injured list. "We feel confident we can win ballgames without me," said Kidd, who could return when the Nets return home. Richard Jefferson had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Kenyon Martin added 17 and 20 for the Nets, who completed a 2-2 road trip, all without Kidd. Rogers and Williams did their part offensively with 11 and 10 points, respectively. But they could not deny O'Neal his spot on the floor and always needed help, which played into the Lakers' hands. "That should be the game plan for every game," O'Neal said. "My guys were looking for me and they were double-teaming me front and back at times. Our guys read the defense well." A follow dunk by Martin had New Jersey within 77-76 with 8:05 to play, but Payton made a floater in the lane and Kareem Rush made a 3-pointer. Martin and O'Neal traded free throws before a triple-teamed O'Neal found a cutting Payton for a layup and an 85-77 advantage with 3:42 to go. O'Neal's three-point play made it 90-79 less than a minute later. "He made some plays from the post, even passing the ball, and it was effective for us," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. The Nets held a surprising 55-46 lead midway through the third quarter. But O'Neal scored 11 points in the period to help the Lakers take a 71-70 advantage into the final 12 minutes. "They're a solid, veteran team. They play very good defense," said Nets guard Kerry Kittles, who scored 19 points. "They know who to leave, when to leave, how to give good help defense."
