Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Stephon Marbury, Allan Houston and the New York Knicks are taking advantage of sub-.500 opponents of late. Marbury collected 24 points and 13 assists and Houston scored 23 points as the Knicks defeated the Washington Wizards, 99-86, to improve to 3-0 in a five-game stretch against Eastern Conference opponents with losing records. Marbury had 35 points and Houston 16 on Friday as the Knicks rallied from a 12-point third-quarter deficit for a 109-103 win at Toronto. "We are getting back into our groove," said Marbury, whose team is in sixth place in the Eastern Conference. "We haven't turned the corner yet, and we want to turn the corner. Going into the playoffs, we want to position ourselves to try and get home-court advantage. It's no longer about making the playoffs, it's where do we want to be in the playoffs." "Stephon Marbury is a heck of a player," Washington coach Eddie Jordan said. "I think Lenny (Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens) has got the team in the right direction. They play hard, and they just pretty much outworked us tonight." New York never trailed after 2-0 in this one but held just a 67-62 lead before going on a 12-0 run bridging the final two quarters. Marbury capped the burst with a layup that made it 79-62 with 10:57 left, and Washington got no closer than nine points thereafter. "That was one of the things that we had in our mind that we really had to focus on, trying to separate ourselves with the lead," Houston said. "I've been on a team like Washington where they are. One thing is when they start playing loose and confident, they're very dangerous. There were times when they started to do that." Gilbert Arenas scored 28 points and Juan Dixon added 25 for the Wizards, who are 0-2 against the Knicks this season. "Right now those are our scorers because no one seems to be able to get a move, or create their own shot, or even to make a shot," Jordan said. "We need to dig down and play harder," Arenas said. "We can't back down, and we need to keep going. As a team we need to come together and fight hard." Tim Thomas had 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting and Nazr Mohammed added 15 on 6-of-11 for the Knicks, who shot 49 percent (39-of-79). Rookie Michael Sweetney chipped in seven points and a season-high 10 rebounds in 23 minutes off the bench. "Our young rookie boy, he just goes after the ball," Wilkens said. "Sweetney had a terrific game for us. He had 10 rebounds, and he's relentless. He just keeps going after it. He understands about positioning and that's huge." New York held a 24-22 edge after one period before opening the second quarter on a 13-2 run, taking a 37-24 advantage on a pair of free throws by Houston with 7:22 left.
