Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- After a long rest, Yao Ming had plenty of energy to carry the Houston Rockets down the stretch. Yao scored eight of his 19 points in the fourth quarter, keying a decisive run in the final minutes to lead the Houston Rockets to a 90-85 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. The 7-5 Yao made just two of his first seven shots and he was guarded well by rookie 7-footer Chris Kaman and Elton Brand. He left the game with 5:09 left in the third quarter and sat for nearly eight minutes before returning energized. Los Angeles had a 73-71 edge when Yao came back with 9:37 remaining. He tied it and sparked a 10-2 run with a layup at 8:17 and gave Houston the lead for good on a dunk 35 seconds later. "I was struggling a little bit," Yao said through an interpreter. "I just think I returned to normal the second half. I don't think we put enough importance on this game and didn't prepare well. It's a good lesson for us. The important thing is at the key moments in the game we were able to step it up." Yao buried a pair of free throws with 5:49 remaining to give the Rockets their largest lead at 81-75. He finished just 4-of-12 from the floor but made 11-of-12 from the line. "(Yao) is a great free-throw shooter," Kaman said. "If you beat him up and foul him, he gets to the free-throw line and then he makes them. The free throws were the killer." Houston made 9-of-17 shots and 7-of-8 free throws in the fourth quarter while holding Los Angeles to 5-of-16 shooting. "Once we decided to defend late, it really helped," Rockets guard Steve Francis said. "We stick to our defensive keys no matter who is in there." "We missed a lot of shots," Los Angeles coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We had a lot of good shots, but didn't make them. The last minute, we had three or four wide-open shots and we couldn't hit them." Francis scored 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting and Maurice Taylor added 15 for the Rockets, who have won 11 of their last 16 games. "Steve's effort was what carried us, he was terrific," Houston coach Jeff van Gundy said. "Yao found a way to come alive in the second half and we played a little better defense in the fourth quarter. It wasn't pretty, but we found a way." Corey Maggette had 26 points and eight rebounds as the shorthanded Clippers played without guards Quentin Richardson (back) and Marko Jaric (toe). Brand collected 16 points and nine rebounds and Kaman had 11 points before fouling out with just under six minutes remaining as Los Angeles lost for the 12th time in its last 16 games.
