Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- When it mattered most, Paul Pierce was able to shake off some poor shooting and make the important plays to help his team win. The same could not be said of Stephon Marbury. Pierce scored 24 points, including a big basket with 24 seconds left, to lead the Boston Celtics to their season-high sixth straight win, an 87-84 victory over the New York Knicks. Pierce worked a pick-and-roll to perfection with Mark Blount, who dunked with 66 seconds left to snap an 82-82 tie and give Boston the lead for good. After New York's Tim Thomas hit 1-of-2 free throws, Pierce got one of his eight rebounds on the offensive end before hitting an off-balance jumper from the left corner for an 85-82 advantage. "Once I created some space, I knew I was going to be able to get a shot off," said Pierce, who rubbed the head of famed Knicks fan Spike Lee after hitting the basket. "When I got the rebound, I looked at the clock, I saw I had three or four seconds to shoot. I took my time and got off the shot." Thomas cut New York's deficit to one point with 18 seconds to go before Pierce made 1-of-2 free throws. After running down the clock, Marbury attempted a 3-pointer from the top of the arc instead of looking for the tie. The ball hit the the rim, and Boston's Ricky Davis got to the rebound and made 1-of-2 from the line with less than a second remaining. "The ball got deflected," said Marbury, who saved the ball after it was tipped away by Boston's Jiri Welsch. "It definitely threw our play way off about what we were about to run. But we're professionals and we're supposed to make plays. I was supposed to make that shot. I had a great look. I thought it was going in." Pierce shot just 9-of-22 from the field, including 1-of-6 from 3-point range, but dished out eight assists and made three steals. "When the game was on the line, we did get good shots," Celtics coach John Carroll said. "We executed. We stopped them when we had to stop them." Blount added 15 points and 17 rebounds and Davis scored 15 points for the Celtics, who have won six in a row for the first time since November 2-13, 2002. They also tied New York (29-36) for sixth place in the Eastern Conference. "There was a playoff atmosphere, playoff intensity and two teams playing for playoff positioning," Pierce said. "It was just a great game to be a part of, even at this part of the season. We are definitely trying to move up from the sixth spot, that is where we are right now. Each and every game is important, especially against (Atlantic) division rivals. This is huge." Allan Houston scored 23 points and Thomas contributed 17 for the Knicks, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Marbury, who had seven assists, shot just 6-of-18 for 14 points. "If we had executed the offense, we would have had more opportunities to score," Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We settled for a little too much for 1-on-1. That's when you have to trust your offense. You have to believe that it will work." New York went 3-1 against Boston but was denied its first series sweep since the 1996-97 season.
