Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Facing the lowly Washington Wizards was just what Voshon Lenard, Carmelo Anthony and the Denver Nuggets needed. Lenard scored 27 points and star rookie Anthony added 26, seven assists and six rebounds as the Nuggets routed the Wizards, 117-87, for just their second victory in 10 games. The Nuggets, who opened a 1 1/2-game lead over idle Utah for the eighth and final Western Conference playoff spot, trailed, 39-35, after a 3-pointer by Washington's Gilbert Arenas with 3:55 left in the second quarter. But Denver scored the final 12 points of the half and opened a 48-39 lead on a jumper by Anthony 1:38 into the third quarter. The bulge was 59-50 before the Nuggets went on a 16-2 run, taking a 75-52 advantage on a tip by Chris Andersen with 2:27 left. "This win just feels great," Anthony said. "It feels like we ain't had a win in almost a month. Just to get this one on the road and knowing that we've got to go to (Eastern Conference playoff hopefuls) New Jersey and Milwaukee, this is a good start for us." "We need every win we can get," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "The most important thing is to build on it because our schedule is a bear in front of us. Every game is so critical to us." The Nuggets' bench outplayed the undermanned Wizards' reserves in the fourth quarter, opening a 32-point cushion in the waning minutes. "That was the longest seven minutes I've ever experienced in an NBA basketball game," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said. "They're beating us like that, and we really didn't have people to put in. I compliment our guys that played at the end. We couldn't even sub in because of guys being hurt." Arenas scored 23 points and Juan Dixon 19 for the Wizards, who were swept by the Nuggets for the first time since 1994-95. Washington, which has lost three games in a row after a 4-1 stretch, shot just 39 percent (31-of-79) and allowed Denver to connect at 54 percent (47-of-87). "Gilbert stood out," Jordan said. "Frankly, he played like an NBA player, and not many other people did for us." Wizards rookie Jarvis Hayes aggravated a left hamstring injury early in the game and was held scoreless in 20 minutes. "It was tough for me to guard Carmelo because he is always moving around, so that made it worse," Hayes said. "It got to the point in the first quarter where I told coach to get me out. He put me back in, but I just didn't feel it." Anthony, a native of nearby Baltimore, missed his first six shots but made 10 of his final 15 attempts. "Nah, I wasn't tight," Anthony said. "I always have trouble starting off shooting in the MCI Center. I seem to get it going towards the end." "He's a great player," Dixon said. "He does so much for his team. He passes the ball well - (I) saw he had seven dimes. He's rebounding and scoring, inside out, coming up with some good plays. He showed why he's the third pick in the draft."
