Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Kenny Thomas is not going to let the Philadelphia 76ers' playoff run end without a fight. Thomas scored 11 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter and grabbed 13 rebounds as the 76ers notched their third straight win, an 89-81 victory over the Chicago Bulls. The 76ers are in danger of missing the postseason for the first time in six years, a stretch that has seen them reach the conference semifinals four times, the most of any Eastern Conference team during that span. With top scorers Allen Iverson and Glenn Robinson sidelined with injuries, Thomas has taken charge with nine straight double-doubles, averaging 18 points and nearly 13 rebounds in that span. He victimized the Bulls for the second time in four days, having gone for 27 points and 11 boards in Saturday's home win. "It feels good to have the ball in my hands and to make good decisions," said Thomas, who made 10-of-17 shots. "But we need Allen and Glenn." "Kenny has been outstanding," Philadelphia coach Chris Ford said. "Defensively, rebounding and he has been our go-to guy. He's confident now with our offense and the touches he gets." Thomas opened the fourth quarter with a jumper for a 62-61 lead, and Philadelphia never trailed again. His 19-footer and steal that turned into a three-point play opened a 70-65 advantage before teammate Kyle Korver drained a 3-pointer. After the Bulls closed to 78-75 with 2:22 to play, Zendon Hamilton made two free throws and Thomas buried another jumper for an 82-75 bulge with 1:27 remaining. "If you miss a couple shots, you don't want to hurt your team, so you get cautious," Thomas said. "But if you're open, you need to take the shot." "He's been playing great," Sixers guard Aaron McKie said. "He's a lunchpail guy who goes out every night and gets a double-double, and now he is finally getting some notoriety." McKie scored 21 points and Eric Snow added 10 and 11 assists for the Sixers (27-38), who remained 1 1/2 games behind Miami and Cleveland, who are tied for the East's final playoff spot. "The guys in this locker room are confident and it's nice to see them rewarded with some wins like tonight," Ford said. "We'll be in pretty good shape if we continue to play like that," McKie said. Jamal Crawford and Eddy Curry scored 18 points apiece for the Bulls, who were swept in the four-game season series. Chicago has lost seven of nine overall. Chicago shot just 37.5 percent (33-of-88) and was beaten on the boards, 49-42. Centers Curry and Tyson Chandler combined for two defensive rebounds in 51 minutes. "You could just feel that we did not have the normal energy, for whatever reason," Bulls coach Scott Skiles said. "We did not shoot the ball well and we got outrebounded again." The Sixers trailed, 40-36, at halftime before McKie scored 11 points in the third quarter. Korver had seven of his 14 points in the first five minutes of the final period, helping Philadelphia open an eight-point lead.
