Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Chauncey Billups scored 19 points and Rasheed Wallace 18, but it was the Detroit Pistons' defense that once again was most impressive. The Pistons extended their NBA record for consecutive games holding opponents under 70 points to four with a 98-65 rout of the lowly Chicago Bulls. Detroit shot 55 percent (41-of-74) from the field and limited Chicago to 31 percent (25-of-81) as it beat the Bulls for the ninth straight meeting and 22nd in 24 encounters since Michael Jordan retired following the 1997-98 season. The Pistons scored the game's first nine points - holding the Bulls without a point for nearly five minutes - and led thereafter. Detroit led 23-16 after one quarter, 52-36 at the break and 73-50 after three periods. "We are coming into games right now focused on defense and holding teams down," Billups said. "If in the fourth quarter we look up and they've got 50-something, then we start shooting for it. Our main goal is just to hold teams down and have everyone help one another." "We didn't go out there saying to ourselves, 'We're going to set a record today,'" Wallace said. "We just went out and played and it ended up the way it did. Chauncey does a good job at the point guard spot. Coach (Larry) Brown makes sure everyone gets their shots." Just about the only thing that did not go right for Detroit was the loss of starting forward Tayshaun Prince to a shoulder injury. He had five points in 18 minutes and sat out the second half. The Pistons also committed 22 turnovers, but the Bulls had 20. "We defended great when you consider all the turnovers we had," Brown said. "It makes it a lot more difficult to keep a team down. But we did a lot of good things defensively and we shared the ball and got a lot of guys an opportunity to play." Reserve Kendall Gill scored 12 points and Linton Johnson added 10 and 14 rebounds for the Bulls, who have lost four straight games and eight of 10. "We spent most of the night searching for any lineup or a consistent lineup so we could get something going but we could never find it," Bulls coach Scott Skiles said. "I'm trying to find a group of guys that are going to follow what we're doing every night, no matter what. Right now, I'm having difficulty doing that." "Tonight was embarrassing," the veteran Gill said. "I don't want to go through any more nights like this. I don't want to have any more seasons like this. That's the way I feel." Johnson started at center in place of Eddy Curry, who is day-to-day with a right thigh bruise.
