Game StoryEAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Despite being red hot, Kenyon Martin managed to keep his cool. Martin scored 28 points, including a pair of clutch free throws with 35 seconds left, as the New Jersey Nets hung on for a 98-97 triumph over the reeling Denver Nuggets. New Jersey was clinging to a 96-94 lead when Denver forward Nene bearhugged Martin, then hammered the All-Star forward. A brief skirmish ensued, but Martin - who has had temper issues in the past and drew a technical foul earlier in the game - kept his composure and drilled both free throws to seal the victory. "It was very hard," Martin said of the temptation to retaliate. "Two years ago, I probably would have hit him. I just calmed down real quick and thought about the consequences. It was huge to knock down the free throws. That way showed him even more." Richard Jefferson scored 21 points for the Nets, who have alternated wins and losses in their last eight games but have not dropped consecutive games since January 15-23. All-Star point guard Jason Kidd returned for New Jersey after missing four games with a bruised left knee and had eight points and 13 assists. The NBA leader in triple-doubles grabbed just four rebounds, but two came in the final 47 seconds. "In all aspects Jason is our captain, an MVP player, just getting him back in there on all levels, physically, emotional, and even spiritual - he's our captain," Nets coach Lawrence Frank said. "I thought he looked like himself, he did a tremendous job and he didn't look like he was gasping for air out there." "It was good to have Jason back," Jefferson said. "We have consistent fast-break points when he is in there." Rookie Carmelo Anthony scored 24 points and Andre Miller added 22 for Denver, which lost for ninth time in 11 games. The Nuggets had their lead over the Utah Jazz for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference shaved to one-half game. "It was a hard-fought game we just came up a little short," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "Well the only thing that is frustrating is when we play hard to the end and we still come up short," Anthony said. "That is the only thing that we should be frustrated about. As far as playing hard, I dont think anybody is hanging their heads." Anthony remained focused on the team's goal this season. "Anything other than playoffs is failure for us," he said. "We have to keep playing the way we're playing. Some games we'll come up short and some games we will win. We've got the eighth place right now, so we control our own destiny." Martin made 11-of-16 shots, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked two shots for the Nets, who have won five straight and six of seven against the Nuggets. "Kenyon Martin was huge on both ends," Frank said. "He was phenomenal. He always provides a big spark. He plays extremely hard." The Nets turned up the defense in the second quarter and built a 52-41 halftime edge. New Jersey milked that advantage well into the fourth quarter and was cruising with a 93-81 cushion with 4:15 to go. But Nene had a short hook and Anthony a layup, sparking a 13-3 burst that set the stage for Martin's clutch free throws. "We lost the game with about two or three minutes to go in the first half, when we turned the ball over and they spurted on us," Bzdelik said. "That stretch really hurt us."
