Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Baron Davis got back into the starting lineup and the New Orleans Hornets got back to winning. Davis bounced back from a terrible performance with 33 points and 10 rebounds as the Hornets pulled away for a 95-84 victory over the Miami Heat, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Davis did not start in Sunday's loss to Toronto after missing the morning shootaround and had just six points on 3-of-12 shooting in 24 minutes. He made up for it in this one, making 9-of-20 shots and 14-of-14 free throws as New Orleans was dominant from the line. "I wanted to get in there and knock down some free throws and really get this offense moving," Davis said. "We came out and played good defense and sustained it for 48 minutes. We wanted to get in there and attack as much as possible." David Wesley made 11-of-11 free throws and Jamaal Magloire sank 8-of-10 as Hornets tied a franchise record with 42 free throws on 46 attempts. The Heat were limited to just 13-of-16 from the line. "It was just one of those games where it was pretty lopsided," Miami forward Brian Grant said. "I had a couple of stupid fouls that contributed to that lopsidedness. There are going to be games like that, but you've still got to find a way to win." After the teams exchanged the lead nine time in the third quarter, New Orleans never trailed in the fourth, opening the period with a 10-1 run. Five different players scored during the spurt, which Davis capped with a pair of free throws for an 82-72 cushion with 7:17 left. Wesley scored 19 points and Magloire had 14 and 17 rebounds as the Hornets (34-30) won for just the second time in six games and remained tied with Milwaukee for fourth place in the Eastern Conference. "With the week we've had, the month we've had, I'd have bet the farm on this one. And I don't own a farm," Wesley said. "Sometimes you need a kick in the (butt), and this was one I game I would've been really, really surprised if we lost." P.J. Brown collected 12 points and 12 rebounds for New Orleans, which held a dominant 58-38 edge on the glass. The Hornets made just 9-of-32 shots in the second half but were 27-of-30 from the line and had a 36-21 edge on the glass. "When you get outrebounded by 20 and the other team shoots 30 more free throws, you are probably not going to win the game," Miami coach Stan Van Gundy said. "We couldn't keep them off the glass and they were at the free-throw line the entire second half." Eddie Jones scored 18 points and Udonis Haslem had 15 and 13 rebounds off the bench to lead the Heat, who failed to tie their longest winning streak of the season. Miami (28-37) fell one-half game behind Boston for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East.
