Game StoryHOUSTON (Ticker) -- It's a simple formula. When Cuttino Mobley scores, the Houston Rockets win. Mobley scored 13 of his 31 points in the second quarter as the Rockets matched their longest winning streak of the season with a 97-86 victory over the New Orleans Hornets. Mobley is third on Houston in scoring at just over 15 points per game but is less consistent than All-Star teammates Steve Francis and Yao Ming. But he is a key to success for the Rockets, who are unbeaten in 13 games this season when he scores at least 20 points. "He's a key player on our team," Yao said through an interpreter. "He helped us get out in front. If we're playing well, our opponents can't guard all of us and one of us should get off." Houston dominated the second quarter behind the hot shooting of Mobley, who made 5-of-6 shots, including three 3-pointers. The Rockets were 11-of-18 from the field while holding the Hornets to 25 percent shooting (5-of-20). "I was just being aggressive," said Mobley, who fell one point shy of a season high. "My back's been bothering me and it felt better tonight. It's hard to get 30 points on this team because we have so many scorers. I was fortunate tonight." Francis opened the second quarter with a jumper before Mobley scored the next 13 points for Houston. Mobley buried three straight 3-pointers in a 3:10 span and followed with baskets on consecutive possessions to key a 21-9 run. "I was in a groove," he said. "I took it upon myself to score. I was passing the ball too much in the first quarter and I came out in the second quarter and just put them up." "Our emphasis was on Yao and that gave Mobley some open looks, and he had his outside game going tonight," New Orleans coach Tim Floyd said. Yao, who had 17 points and nine rebounds, made back-to-back baskets to give the Rockets a 42-29 cushion with 2:56 left. Houston had a 49-34 halftime advantage and led by as many as 21 points in the third quarter. Francis and Jim Jackson added 19 points apiece for Houston, which has won four straight for the fourth time this season. "We're grinding out some wins and hopefully trying to build something good," Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "That's what we're trying to do. I think we played a little bit better." The Rockets (37-26) moved within two games of idle Memphis for sixth place in the Western Conference. Baron Davis scored 30 points and Jamaal Magloire collected 10 and 11 rebounds as the Hornets lost for the fifth time in seven games. "We wanted to contain Yao, but (the Rockets) have great players around him that stepped up and had great games," Hornets forward P.J. Brown said. "Houston was making shots and our defense wasn't there. We had good looks, but we didn't make our shots." New Orleans (34-30) shot just 39 percent (33-of-84), despite making 10-of-26 3-pointers, and fell one-half game behind fourth-place Milwaukee in the East.
