Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- It appears anyone can get a career high against the Washington Wizards. Stephen Jackson scored 42 points and journeyman Jason Collier added 22 - both career highs - as the Atlanta Hawks raced to a 138-124 victory over the defenseless Wizards, who have lost five straight games. On Wednesday, the Wizards allowed Orlando's Tracy McGrady to score a staggering 62 points. Their inability to stop foes continued against Atlanta, which reached 130 points for the first time since April 19, 1997 vs. Philadelphia. "When they're doing anything they want, it's like everybody is looking at everybody else," Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas said. Jackson shattered his previous career high of 30, most recently set Monday against Cleveland. He made 14-of-24 shots, including 4-of-5 3-pointers, and 10-of-10 free throws. "If he hit his layups in the first half, he would have had 50," Hawks coach Terry Stotts said. "He did the same thing he did against Cleveland. He picked everything up." Collier, a center who was signed to a 10-day contract earlier this week, came off the bench to make 7-of-8 shots and 8-of-9 free throws to eclipse his previous high of 16, which also came Monday in his Hawks' debut. Bob Sura had a season-high 28 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds for the Hawks, who had five players with at least 20 points for the first time since November 13, 1968. They were the first NBA team with five 20-plus scorers since Orlando on January 26, 1993. "I have to talk to the statistician," Sura said. "I think there were 10 rebounds in there somewhere." Jason Terry scored 23 points and Chris Crawford added 20 as the Hawks shot 55 percent (46-of-83) and ended a four-game slide. "That was an old-fashioned shootout," Sura said. "That was a late 1980s NBA score. It was a lot of fun, though, getting up and down, scoring points. That's the way the game should be played." Arenas had 30 points and 10 assists and Jerry Stackhouse scored 29 points for the Wizards, who actually led by 18 points midway through the second quarter before allowing 83 points in the second half. "In the second quarter, we had some turnovers that were very careless, and that got them going," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said. "That got them on a run and gave them a lot of confidence going to halftime." The Hawks trailed 62-55 at halftime but scored 45 points in the third quarter to open a 100-88 lead. Jackson had 14 points and Sura 10 in the period. "We started playing the last five minutes of the first half and kept going from there," Stotts said. Stackhouse returned after declaring his season over due to chronic knee woes two weeks ago. He scored just eight points after halftime. "I felt good," he said. "I got tired in the second half."
