Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Indiana Pacers did not need a stellar offensive effort from All-Star Jermaine O'Neal to defeat the Boston Celtics. Reggie Miller scored 18 points and reserves Al Harrington and Jonathan Bender added 16 apiece as the Pacers routed the Celtics, 99-81, for their seventh straight victory and eighth in nine games on the road. O'Neal scored just eight points on 3-of-11 shooting but had four blocks and helped Indiana limit Boston to 38 percent shooting (21-of-56) through three quarters and 41 percent overall (31-of-76). O'Neal sat out the fourth quarter with the Pacers holding a comfortable 72-53 lead. "This team is so deep it takes a lot of pressure off us," O'Neal said. "Tonight, I shoot 3-for-11 and Ron (Artest) shoots 3-for-11 and we win by almost 20. That's how we want to be able to do things. We've got a lot of guys on this team that can step up in a major, major way. We've got guys on this team that can be starters on other teams." The game was tied, 38-38, before the Pacers embarked on a 28-7 run bridging the second and third quarters. Artest scored seven of his 10 points in the final 3:31 of the first half and Miller had 10 points in the first 4:33 of the second half to break open the contest. "In the second half, we wanted to come out and really set a tone defensively, understanding that we were up nine and if we could into the game the first five or six minutes, we knew that was going to be important," Miller said. "We did that, we stopped their transition and we got out and ran a little bit ourselves, and got some 3-pointers up and they went down." "When we need to get momentum going, he always comes through," Artest said of Miller, who had two 3-pointers early in the third quarter. "That's what he did for us today, he hit a couple of big threes." Paul Pierce had 21 points to pace the Celtics, who have lost back-to-back games after a season-high six-game winning streak. His basket with 8:08 left in the second quarter gave him 10,000 career points, eclipsing Larry Bird as the fastest Celtic to accomplish the feat. "It's a great accomplishment because the Celtic franchise is one of the greatest franchises in all of sports and with all the great players that have come through here, for me to be able to accomplish a feat like that and be the fastest player to do that, it's just great knowing that I'm going to be part of Celtic history," Pierce said. The Pacers, who shot 51 percent (38-of-75), scored 26 points off 18 Boston turnovers, but the Celtics managed just 10 points off 15 Indiana giveaways. "When we play a team like the Lakers or like the Indiana Pacers, with the team that we have, we need to go out and play the perfect game," Pierce said. "We can't have mental lapses, we have no room for error. We're not quite at that level with those teams." Indiana is a league-best 24-10 on the road. "When our second unit goes in and plays the way that they did tonight, it's a great luxury, especially at this time of year when a lot of teams are getting worn down," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "We able to play guys like Jermaine O'Neal 30 minutes and Ron Artest 28-30 minutes and that really helps."
