Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- The best remedy for the struggling Dallas Mavericks has been the Phoenix Suns. Michael Finley scored a season-high 38 points on 15-of-23 shooting as the Mavericks dropped the Suns for the second time in six days, 113-90. Antoine Walker added 18 points and nine rebounds for Dallas, which has won just twice in its last six games - both over Phoenix. The Mavericks snapped a four-game road losing streak and won at America West Arena for the first time in five visits. "We needed to come out strong because we haven't had a lot of success on the road." Finley said. "Tonight we wanted to give ourselves a chance by having a lot of energy from the first jump ball all the way through the entire game." This game was never a contest as Dallas - led by Finley's 25's points - scored a season-high 70 points in the first half, leading by as many as 31. Phoenix trimmed the deficit to 16 late in the third quarter but got no closer. "I don't care if it was a blowout or we won at the buzzer because we haven't played well at all on the road," said Mavericks forward Antawn Jamison, who had 15 points and 10 rebounds. "We needed to come out of the box strong and we did." Dallas (41-24) climbed back into fifth place in the Western Conference, one-half game ahead of Memphis (41-25). Amare Stoudemire collected 25 points and five blocks for the Suns, who have lost five of their last six games and 16 of 20. Stoudemire has led Phoenix in scoring in 13 of the last 14 games. Finley scored 17 points in the first quarter, including nine in a 22-6 run that opened a 35-19 lead with 1:40 remaining. Dallas extended its lead to 70-42 at the half. "The game was probably over at halftime," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "We just needed to hang on." "It was a bad first half, just awful," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "A combination of bad defense and bad shooting does not make a pretty first half." Dallas outrebounded Phoenix, 64-43. The Mavericks are 30-7 when they outrebound their opponent and the Suns are 9-31 when they lose the battle of the boards. The home team had won the last seven games in the series. Phoenix used its 22nd different starting lineup.
