Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Zydrunas Ilgauskas helped the Cleveland Cavaliers continue their playoff push with one of their best wins of the season. Ilgauskas made two free throws and a key defensive play in the final minute as the surging Cavaliers extended their winning streak to a season-high six games with a 107-104 victory over the league-leading Indiana Pacers. Battling to make the playoffs for the first time since 1997-98, the Cavaliers hung tough all game against the Pacers, who came in with a seven-game winning streak. Ilgauskas' two free throws with 36 seconds left snapped a 104-104 tie. On Indiana's ensuing possession, the 7-3 Lithuanian took the challenge of guarding All-Star Jermaine O'Neal and knocked the ball off him out of bounds. "Zydrunas Ilgauskas came through at the right times, with a big block, and knocking the ball off (Jermaine) O'Neal's foot, and that was the ballgame," Cavaliers coach Paul Silas said. "I never touched it," O'Neal maintained. "It's one of those things that happens in a game that's so emotional, and sometimes refs don't get the angle to see it." Jeff McInnis made 1-of-2 free throws with 18 seconds left to push the lead to three points before Ron Artest and Jamaal Tinsley missed 3-pointers with under 10 seconds to go. Rookie phenom LeBron James scored 24 of his 26 points in the first three quarters for the Cavaliers, who beat the Pacers for the first time in four tries this season while snapping an overall eight-game losing streak against their Central Division rivals. The Cavaliers were able to continue their winning ways despite going the final 3:24 without a basket. James may not have been a factor offensively in the fourth quarter but made his presence felt on the defensive end in the waning seconds by stepping out and forcing Artest into a tough 3-pointer that missed long as time expired. "By far, (Artest is) one of the best players I've ever played against," James said. "He brings intensity to the game." O'Neal collected 32 points and 12 rebounds for Indiana, which failed in its bid to become the first team to win 50 games. A jumper by Kevin Ollie gave the Cavaliers a 100-94 lead with seven minutes remaining. But Artest scored eight points in a 10-4 surge that tied the contest with 83 seconds to go. Artest, who battled foul trouble, scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half. With Artest being limited, Al Harrington picked up the slack and scored 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting. "The last time we were here, (Artest) was saddled with three fouls in the first half," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. One of the NBA's best defensive players, Artest played just nine minutes in the opening half. That allowed James to flourish as he scored 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting, helping the Cavaliers open a 62-58 lead. McInnis added 16 points and 10 assists. Lee Nailon, working on his second 10-day contract, matched a season high with 15 points for Cleveland, which shot 54.5 percent (42-of-77).
