Game StoryMINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- If the Minnesota Timberwolves miss out on home-court advantage throughout the postseason, the Portland Trail Blazers may be the reason why. Derek Anderson scored 21 points and Zach Randolph added 20 as the Trail Blazers continued their strong play of late with an easy 92-83 triumph over the Timberwolves, their second in five days. Minnesota (46-20) dropped 3 1/2 games behind Sacramento and Indiana for the NBA's best record following a lackluster effort in which it trailed early and never rallied. The Timberwolves fell to 1-3 this season against Portland, which is locked in a battle just to reach the postseason. Since losing four straight, Portland (33-33) has won four of five to draw within 1 1/2 games of Denver for the eighth and final playoff berth in the conference. "This was a big win for us," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "Everybody that performed out there played well." Anderson scored eight points and Randolph seven in an opening quarter where Portland shot 67 percent (12-of-18) and took a 33-21 lead. A 13-2 run late in the second quarter enabled the Trail Blazers to pull away, and Minnesota never got closer than seven points in the final quarter. "This was another game where we had a poor start and our opponent got confidence and momentum," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders. "It was a tough one today," Minnesota guard Sam Cassell said. "They dominated from start to finish. ... We played catch-up throughout the whole game." Cassell and Kevin Garnett scored 20 points apiece for Minnesota, which committed just six turnovers but allowed Portland to grab 22 offensive rebounds. "They were very, very aggressive on the glass. That is why I compare them to the Bud Light Daredevils, the way they fly to the rim," Saunders said. "They had 22 offensive rebounds and we only had 23 defensive rebounds." The Timberwolves have lost five straight Sunday games. Cassell tried to motivate his teammates prior to the contest with a guarantee that Minnesota would "take care of business" against Portland. The guarantee, which appeared in the local papers, was a hot topic after the game. "Whatever they've got to do to motivate themselves," Cassell said. "I said that to motivate our guys to win this one. We haven't won one on a Sunday in a month. We need to win. I'll say it again next week." "What Cassell said was no big deal," Trail Blazers forward Darius Miles said. "People always talk. We don't need things like that to get us motivated." Saunders was quick to point out that this loss had nothing to do with the day of the week. "We didn't lose this game because it was on a Sunday," he said. "We lost because of the way they played and what they took from us."
