Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- It's taken nearly three years, but Kwame Brown looks as if he's finally come of age. Brown had career highs of 30 points and 19 rebounds as the Washington Wizards stopped a seven-game losing streak with a stunning 114-108 victory over the Sacramento Kings. The first overall pick in 2001, the 22-year-old Brown has been slow to develop. But he had the best game of his young career while matching up at times against one of the NBA's best power forwards in Chris Webber. Brown hit his first seven shots and scored 16 points in the opening quarter. He finished 12-of-16 from the field while playing all 48 minutes. "I just felt confident tonight," Brown said. "I hit a couple of shots, and I felt like I couldn't miss. I wanted the ball every time down." Brown also frustrated Webber, who seemed a step slow. The superstar returned earlier this month after undergoing offseason knee surgery. "It's a shame when you let someone get their career points and rebounds against you," said Webber, who scored 16 points and committed five turnovers. "Chris Webber's just not himself right now," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said. "You can see on tape. He doesn't have his lift, he doesn't have his quickness. He doesn't really have anything but his feel." Unlike his coach, Brown failed to offer any sympathy for the Webber. "Webber seemed like he was a little slow," Brown said. "I think he's injured. But, he's out there on the floor; I'm going to go at him." Brown was not alone in his battle against Webber as point guard Gilbert Arenas collected 27 points, 10 assists and a career-high eight steals. Arenas made just 9-of-29 shots but hit five of the Wizards' seven 3-pointers. Arenas' 3-pointer with 5:52 left in the third quarter gave the Wizards the lead for good, 65-64. Washington extended the lead to 84-75 entering the final period. The Kings rallied in the fourth quarter, closing to 105-103 with two minutes remaining on a pair of free throws by Brad Miller. But Mitchell Butler made a jumper with the shot clock winding down with 1:36 left, then 10 seconds later Webber put up an underhand shot that landed over the backboard. Etan Thomas, who had 12 points off the bench, scored on a dunk with 73 seconds left to all but seal things for the Wizards. Peja Stojakovic scored 25 points and Mike Bibby added 20 for the Kings (49-19), who clinched a playoff berth when Portland lost at Indiana. Sacramento, coming off Tuesday's defeat at New Jersey, has lost consecutive games for the first time since January 23-25. Sacramento coach Rick Adelman was upset with his team's effort. "We just seemed to be out of sync as a team," Adelman said. "We're not playing at the same level, we play in spurts and spurts aren't good enough to win in this league. We're just not playing well."
