Game StoryCLEVELAND (Ticker) -- The Cleveland Cavaliers may be challenging for a playoff spot in LeBron James' rookie season, but they were no match for the Detroit Pistons. Chauncey Billups led six players in double figures with 18 points as the surging Pistons routed the Cavaliers, 96-76, for their eighth straight win. Detroit (46-25), which moved a season-high 21 games over .500, held its previous seven opponents to 75 points or fewer. The Pistons put away this game early, opening a 53-31 halftime lead. "We were great, we were better than good," Detroit coach Larry Brown said of his team's play in the first half. "We zoned a little bit and our zone was pretty effective. We full-courted a little bit, and that was effective." Richard Hamilton added 14 points and Tayshaun Prince and Mehmet Okur chipped in 13 apiece for Detroit. Ben Wallace grabbed 10 rebounds for the Pistons, who held the Cavaliers to 38 percent shooting (29-of-76) from the field. "Ever since we were on the West Coast trip and we got Lindsay (Hunter) in the lineup, we've really been pressuring defensively, getting turnovers and getting easy baskets," Prince said. Carlos Boozer collected 21 points and 17 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who have dropped two in a row following a season-high seven-game winning streak. "They just cracked down on defense every shot that we took," James said. "They made it difficult for us. They are a great defensive team." Boozer made 10-of-12 shots but did not get much help from his teammates as the Pistons led by as many as 28 points in the fourth quarter. "We came out and did what we said we were going to do - come out on the defensive end and make them work for everything they got," Wallace said. James was not at 100 percent in Friday's loss to Utah and scored just 14 points on 4-of-14 shooting. He felt better in this one but continued to struggle, going 5-of-17 for 15 points. "I had a lot more energy," James said. "I was able to breathe a lot better." The defeat dropped Cleveland into eighth place in the tight Eastern Conference playoff race, one game ahead of the Boston Celtics. "They are a very good team and we needed all of our weapons tonight just to be competitive, and we didn't have everybody," Cavaliers coach Paul Silas said. "You need somebody to steady you out there and that was our major problem. I am not knocking our guys, but we just didn't have it."
