Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Over the weekend, rookie Carmelo Anthony's former team won two games they had to win at the Pepsi Center. On Monday, Anthony's current squad claimed one of its own. Anthony led six players in double figures with 22 points as the Denver Nuggets rolled to a 102-80 rout of the Los Angeles Clippers. While the Nuggets endured a lost weekend with blowout losses at Detroit and Minnesota, Syracuse had better results in Denver as it began defending the national title Anthony led them to last season with a pair of close wins. After scoring just 53 points in Denver's winless three-game road trip, Anthony helped the Nuggets (37-35) move back into a tie with idle Utah for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Portland is one game back. With Anthony's former college teammates and Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim at the game, the Nuggets won for just the fifth time in 17 tries. They got 40 points from their bench players and bridged the third and fourth quarters with a 15-1 run to take an 86-66 advantage with 8:44 to play. "This was a solid win and one we obviously needed very badly," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "The energy that the bench gave us was great." Jon Berry led the way for the reserves with 12 points, five rebounds and eight assists. Earl Boykins added 11 points for the Nuggets, who won for just the fifth time in their last 17 games. "It was a great energy game for us," Barry said. "Jeff stuck with (the bench). I think that's something that can develop confidence in our bench." The lone bright spot for the Clippers, who lost their fourth straight game, was Pregrag Drobnjak. He scored a season-high 24 points, including 16 in the second quarter when it looked like Denver might run away with the game after taking a 31-15 lead after 12 minutes. "Drobnjak gave a good lift off the bench," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We had opportunities, but we kind of gave them away." The Nuggets, who earned a split in the four-game season series, led 53-45 at halftime. Los Angeles managed to get within 71-65 with 2:10 remaining in the third period before Denver went on its big spurt to put away the game. "We had our backs against the wall," Anthony said. "This was a must-win game for us and we came out and took care of business." Denver rebounded from a poor 31-percent shooting performance in Sunday's 98-77 loss at Minnesota. The Nuggets shot 51 percent (40-of-79) from the floor and improved to 18-3 in games in which they shoot 50 percent or better. The Clippers were without three of their five best scorers, including leading scorer Corey Maggette, who missed his second straight game due to soreness in his left knee. Things won't be as easy for the Nuggets in their next game as they get a rematch against Minnesota at home on Wednesday night. "We got 10 games left," Anthony said. "We need to try and go out and win all 10 games and just give it our all."
