Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Pau Gasol and Stromile Swift made sure the Memphis Grizzlies kept up their NBA version of "March Madness." Gasol scored 29 points and Swift added 21 as the Grizzlies ran their March record to a franchise-best 9-2 with a 95-86 victory over the Toronto Raptors. The Grizzlies have won 10 of their last 12 games and are an NBA-best 19-5 since February 1. Memphis (44-26) moved into a tie with idle Dallas for fifth place in the Western Conference. "We're excited," Memphis forward James Posey said. "We're playing good basketball, but we aren't letting things go to our head. We'll see what position we put ourselves in." Trailing by double digits for most of the contest, the Raptors trimmed the deficit to 88-82 on a basket by Vince Carter with 2:25 to play. But Swift, who scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, made a tough, turnaround bank shot and drew a foul, completing the three-point play. "That was the best game Stro has played all year," Memphis coach Hubie Brown said. "He could have had 30 or 35 points in the same 32 minutes." Posey's steal and dunk on the ensuing possession gave Memphis a 93-82 advantage and sealed the game. "I just want to go in and help the team win and bring some energy to the game," Swift said. "I want to bring a spark." Memphis closed the half with a 15-5 spurt to lead 54-40 at the break behind 18 points from Gasol. The lead grew to 21 points early in the third period. Jalen Rose was assessed a technical foul after arguing a non-call on his drive to the basket with 3:40 remaining in the third quarter. He threw his headband into the stands and was promptly ejected. "I have heard and seen a lot worse than what I did," Rose said. "I thought I was really mature about the call. The bad thing about it all was that I let my team down." The Raptors immediately responded by reeling off a 10-3 run and trimming the deficit to 12 points at the end of the third quarter. Memphis outscored Toronto in the paint, 48-28. "We got pounded in the paint again," Toronto coach Kevin O'Neill said. "Let's face it - it's very difficult to match Pau Gasol play after play. Size hurts us on a regular basis." Carter scored 30 points and Donyell Marshall added 13 and 17 rebounds for the Raptors (30-40), who remained one game behind Cleveland for the eighth and final spot in the East. "We didn't take care of business tonight, I don't care what the other teams are doing if we don't win," Carter said. "We didn't win, that's all that matters."
