Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Although the Memphis Grizzlies are virtually assured of their first playoff berth come April, they may not want March to end. Stromile Swift scored 19 points off the bench to lead a balanced attack as the Grizzlies set a franchise record for wins in a month with a 109-86 rout of the Houston Rockets, their fourth straight triumph. The Grizzlies (46-26) improved to 11-2 in March, the most wins they have had in any month in any season since entering the NBA in 1995. "We feel very confident and we're playing aggressive," forward Pau Gasol said. "We are running and we have energy, and that's giving us a lot of good things." "It's kind of amazing, isn't it?" coach Hubie Brown said. "They were running tonight, and when they're running like that, they're fun to watch." One of the Grizzlies' losses was an 88-80 setback at Houston on March 13, but they avenged that in a big way. Memphis never trailed, racing to a 39-19 lead after one quarter. The Grizzlies made five of their 10 3-pointers in the first period, when they shot 75 percent (15-of-20). "They are the best team in the league right now," Rockets guard Cuttino Mobley said. "They played extremely hard and when you are in a rhythm like that, it doesn't matter what kind of shot that you take." Jason Williams made three 3-pointers in the first quarter and finished with 18 points for the Grizzlies, who led, 59-42, at halftime and by as many as 29 points in the second half. Gasol, James Posey and Bonzi Wells added 12 apiece. "We came out hard, jumping on guys," Wells said. "Both units (starters and subs) were on the same page. All our guys are just in an excellent groove right now." Steve Francis scored 17 points for the Rockets, whose usually stingy defense was strafed for 100 points for just the eighth time this season. "I don't think I did a good job as a coach getting our team prepared," Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "You have to be ready to play, to be No. 1, and we were not ready to compete at the level that they competed at." The Grizzlies also played some defense as Jake Tsakalidis and Swift limited Rockets 7-5 center Yao Ming to 14 points on 5-of-13 shooting, nearly doubling his output. "You don't know how tough of an assignment that was for Jake and Stromile," Brown said. "That's a lot of punishment, trying to get around him. It's like trying to get around Shaq (O'Neal)." While Memphis shot 10-of-20 from the arc and committed just 11 turnovers, Houston was just 2-of-13 with 20 giveaways.
