Game StoryNEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Suns had few problems extending the New Orleans Hornets' misery. The Suns have the worst record in the Western Conference but hardly looked it as they led the entire second half in a 99-94 victory over the Hornets. Amare Stoudemire, last season's Rookie of the Year, scored 25 points and Shawn Marion added 21 points, 10 rebounds and six assists to lead the Suns to their third victory in four games against an Eastern Conference playoff contender. This one came against New Orleans, which is 0-4 in the last eight days against teams with losing records and losers of 10 of its last 15 overall. The Hornets (37-36) are fourth in the Eastern Conference, one-half game ahead of Milwaukee. "All these games are magnified because we need them so bad," said Hornets guard David Wesley, whose team begins a five-game trip Tuesday at the Los Angeles Lakers and concludes it April 6 at Sacramento. "All these games feel like they weigh a ton," he said. "If we go out (West) and not play well, we could come back and not be in the playoffs." Hornets All-Star guard Baron Davis missed his second consecutive game with a sprained left ankle and is day-to-day. Phoenix, which surrendered a 15-point lead Wednesday in a loss at Philadelphia and already is out of playoff contention, survived a fourth-quarter rally by New Orleans that twice cut an 11-point deficit to one in the final three minutes. "We played strong for three quarters in Philadelphia and thought we had that game in hand," Stoudemire said. "This time we played strong defense. That's what we've been lacking the entire season. We were strong on the boards and did the things we need to do to close out games." Darrell Armstrong's 3-pointer with 2:37 remaining cut Phoenix's lead to 93-92, but Marion made two free throws. Jamaal Magloire's shot in the paint pulled Hornets within 95-94 with 33 seconds to play, but Joe Johnson scored on an isolation play to make it 97-94 with 13 seconds remaining. Marion made two free throws for the final points after Wesley missed a shot in the lane on New Orleans' final possession. "I don't mind making shots down the stretch," said Johnson, who scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half after averaging 29 points in the previous two games. "That's what I've been working for, to have chances to win games." Phoenix extended a 46-41 halftime lead to 80-71 by shooting 77 percent from the floor in the third quarter. But the Hornets rallied behind the shooting of Armstrong and Steve Smith, who were a combined 8-of-8 from 3-point range in the second half. Armstrong and Magloire each scored 22 points for New Orleans, and Smith recorded a season-high 18. Magloire grabbed 14 rebounds in his fourth consecutive double-double and 14th in the last 17 games.
