Game StoryBOSTON (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia 76ers picked a bad time to establish a dubious franchise record. Again playing without superstar guard Allen Iverson, the 76ers shot just 27 percent from the floor and scored a season low in points, falling to the Boston Celtics, 89-65. "We just couldn't make a shot tonight," said 76ers forward Kenny Thomas, who scored 18 points. "You have games like this where you get blown out, that's just the way it is, but we didn't need it right now. That's the biggest thing." The Sixers were 24-of-89 from the field. It showed on the scoreboard as they scored a franchise record-low 23 points in the first half - nine in the second quarter. Their previous low was 24 against Miami on February 21, 1996. "I thought we had tremendous looks," 76ers coach Chris Ford said. "No one was dropping them. Every time out I just kept encouraging them, saying, `The next one is gonna go.'" Philadelphia slipped 2 1/2 behind Boston for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with only eight games remaining. The Celtics moved one-half game in front of idle Cleveland. The Celtics put down the defensive clamps early and wound up putting away the game much sooner than the sellout crowd of 18,624 was anticipating. Boston led, 16-14, with 4:07 left in the first quarter but opened a 25-14 lead in the second after Philadelphia went scoreless for more than 6 1/2 minutes. The Sixers failed to make a basket in the last 7:06 of the half, scoring only two points. "I credit that to our defense," said Celtics forward Paul Pierce, who scored 11 points in 27 minutes. "We did a great job of scrambling. "They did miss some open shots that we gave them in the first half, but I thought for the most part we did a good, solid job playing good, solid defense and making them beat us over the top." Boston carried a 42-34 into the half and sent members of both media relations' staffs scurrying for the record books. The 23 points given up by the Celtics in the first half established a new franchise record since the inception of the shot clock. They twice allowed 25, most recently on February 14, 1978 at Golden State. In the second quarter alone, the Sixers went just 3-for-18 from the floor - 1-of-8 from beyond the 3-point arc - and hit just two of their four free throws. Kyle Korver had 15 points off the bench for Philadelphia, making all four of his 3-point attempts in the fourth quarter. Aaron McKie had 11 for the Sixers, who once again were without Iverson. The All-Star guard missed his fourth straight game with a bad right knee. Chucky Atkins tied a season high with 10 assists for the Celtics, who led by as many as 25 points in the third quarter. "When we get a team down, especially here in the FleetCenter, we have to put them away," Atkins said. "These last nine games we need to be in a playoff mentality where when we get teams down we need to put them away." Ricky Davis, Mark Blount and Juri Welsch each had 13 points for the Celtics.
