Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Utah Jazz got their first look at Karl Malone in another uniform but didn't seem intimidated. Malone had 19 points and 13 rebounds in his first game against his former team and Kobe Bryant scored 34 as the Los Angeles Lakers extended their winning streak to eight games with a 91-84 victory over the Jazz. Malone was sidelined with a knee injury in Los Angeles' first three meetings with Utah, which is unexpectedly fighting for a playoff spot despite the loss of the best player in franchise history. "It is somewhat bitter sweet because you are playing against guys you really like," Malone said. "They got hot and got on a run, but it was a nice effort and a nice win for us." The Jazz made just one basket in the final 5 1/2 minutes but had a 79-77 edge with 4:28 remaining. The Lakers responded with eight straight points, capped by Bryant's jumper with 70 seconds left. Los Angeles made only one basket in the final 7:15 but hit 14-of-18 free throws during that span. The Lakers went 34-of-49 from the line, including a 17-of-21 performance from Bryant. The Jazz were just 16-of-24. Shaquille O'Neal collected 11 points and 14 rebounds for Los Angeles, which moved within two games of Pacific Division-rival Sacramento for the best record in the Western Conference. Gary Payton added 17 points and three assists for the Lakers. His second assist of the game was the 8,000th of his career. "You have to credit all of the great players that have played with me and made shots," Payton said of moving into sixth place on the all-time assist list. "I have had a lot of longevity from being hurt, so it is just one of those things. But it was great for me." Raja Bell scored 26 points and fellow reserve Raul Lopez added 12 to lead Utah, which fell into a virtual tie with Portland for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West. The Jazz started the final quarter with a 20-6 run to pull even with the Lakers at 75-75, with Bell scoring 12 of the points. The Jazz took the lead on a pair of free throws by Bell with 4:29 left. "The Lakers made some substitutions that let us get back in the game," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "But for a young team, we have to learn how to play when it gets tough. "I don't care who you are playing against. If you can't get the ball and you can't get the offense, then you don't deserve to win. We certainly didn't." The Lakers scored the next eight points, with Bryant and Payton each tallying four. The Jazz twice came within four of the Lakers but could get no closer in the final minute. "It was a tough win for us," Bryant said. "They really fought us hard in a very physical game. But we managed to make the right push at the right time." Los Angeles started the third quarter with an 11-3 run to take a 55-42 lead with 6:19 left in the quarter. The Lakers maintained their lead and took a 69-55 advantage into the final quarter. "It was sticky out there tonight," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "It was like a mud wrestling contest where there's a lot of bodies going around and a lot of fouling. It was tough to sort it out. Their second unit was very difficult for us to handle." Lopez's 15-foot jump shot and 3-pointer with 5:17 left in the half gave the Jazz a 35-29 lead, the biggest for either team in the first 24 minutes. Bryant hit two free throws with 4:57 to play in the half. Payton followed with a jumper and a 3-pointer as the Lakers outscored Utah 12-1 to take a 43-38 lead at halftime.
