Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Coach Don Nelson resurrected "small ball" in response to Dirk Nowitzki's call for change. But any system probably would have succeeded against the Tracy McGrady-less Orlando Magic. With rookies Josh Howard and Marquis Daniels in the starting lineup and Antoine Walker logging minutes at center, the Dallas Mavericks capped a disappointing five-game road trip with an 118-88 rout of the Magic. Dallas started the trip with a win over the New Jersey Nets last Sunday, taking advantage of the absence of injured All-Stars Jason Kidd and Kenyon Martin. But the Mavericks followed with losses to Philadelphia, Indiana and Miami. After the loss to Miami, Nowitzki expressed his frustration, saying Nelson had "to change something if we want to do something in the playoffs." For now, Nelson's solution is to go with a small lineup, although that will probably not work in the Western Conference playoffs. But against the Magic, who own the NBA's worst record, the Mavericks dictated a fast tempo from the start and cruised. "We got in the open court and we did a lot of good things with the small lineup," Nelson said. "It gives us a lot more options with Walker playing center on offense. Anyway, let's see what happens coming up. We'll definitely go with it the rest of the regular season and then see how it's working." As is usually the case, Nowitzki led Dallas with 25 points and the two rookies combined for 39 points. Daniels followed up a 31-point performance at Miami with 20 points and seven assists and Howard tied a season-high with 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. An Orlando native, Daniels has taken advantage of his increased minutes due to the absence of Michael Finley, who missed his third straight game with a strained right calf. "Trying to fill in for Mike is a big thing," said Daniels, who made 9-of-16 shots. "He is a great scorer for us and brings a lot of intensity. My thing is to play defense for the team and get points when they need them from me." Facing little resistance from the league's worst defense, the Mavericks shot a blistering 67 percent in the first half, converting 28-of-42 shots, when it built a 62-43 advantage. A layup by Daniels increased the lead to 77-52 with 7:06 left in the third quarter. After Orlando scored the next 10 points, the Mavericks went on a 7-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Daniels with 49 seconds remaining. Dallas maintained a lead of more than 20 points for most of the fourth quarter. The loss was the eighth in a row for Orlando, which played without McGrady, the NBA's leading scorer, for the fourth time in five games. He has been bothered by soreness in his left knee. "I know he warmed up before to see how it felt, but he had mentioned to me yesterday that he didn't think he would be able to go," said Magic coach Johnny Davis. "But it's day-to-day, so obviously it didn't feel healthy enough or right enough, so he didn't play." Drew Gooden led Orlando with 20 points and 10 rebounds and Tyronn Lue added 19 points.
