Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Jason Williams had the hot hand at the right time for the red-hot Memphis Grizzlies. Williams sank a pair of 3-pointers in a 24-second span late in the fourth quarter as the Grizzlies held off the Toronto Raptors, 94-88, and extended their winning streak to five games. The Raptors had pulled within 82-78 on a layup by Vince Carter with 2:36 left before Williams, who had eight of his points in the last three minutes, connected twice from long distance to make it 88-78 with 1:54 left. "Jason handled the game management from two minutes down great," Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown said. "He knew when to push and when to back off and run the clock. That was big for us." Toronto never got closer than six points the rest of the way and dropped its fourth straight game to further dampen its playoff hopes. The Raptors are in 11th place in the Eastern Conference playoff race, three games behind eighth-place Boston and Cleveland. To make matters worse, Carter played most of the game with a hip flexor injury that he said he tweaked in the first quarter. After scoring at least 40 points twice in his last four games, Carter was held to 16 on 6-of-22 shooting. "I'm getting the same looks as the last game. I just couldn't buy a basket," said Carter, who was guarded at times by both James Posey and Shane Battier. "The way I played the last week is a thing of the past." Pau Gasol scored 23 points and Stromile Swift added 18 off the bench for Memphis (47-26), which improved to 12-2 in March and seeks its first-ever playoff berth. "It would be great for this city, the franchise and all of my teammates and the coaching staff, but we're not there yet," Williams said. "We're a team with team guys." The Grizzlies, currently fifth in the Western Conference, also have a winning road record at 18-17. Among the catalysts on Sunday was Swift, who was one of five reserves to play at least 20 minutes. "We have a lot of guys that can score the ball," Swift said. "So we just come out and bring energy and get us going." The Grizzlies led by as many as 11 points in the first half and had a 52-45 lead at intermission. Gasol had a rough afternoon on the free-throw line, making just 9-of-18 shots, but he was 7-of-13 from the field and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Jalen Rose had a team-high 16 points and Donyell Marshall had 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Raptors, whose recent slide has called into question the job security of coach Kevin O'Neill and general manager Glen Grunwald. "I thought our team gave themselves a chance to win today," O'Neill said. "We had to hold them to a couple of big stops at the end and we weren't able to do it."
