Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Bruce Bowen and Tony Parker made sure LeBron James did not enjoy another career game. Bowen and Parker did a solid job defending James as the San Antonio Spurs posted a 101-93 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. After scoring a career-high 41 points in Saturday's victory over New Jersey, the 19-year-old James was guarded at times by Bowen - one of the best on-the-ball defenders in the NBA - and the feisty Parker. James managed 18 points on 9-of-20 shooting while playing just the first three quarters. He scored just six points on 3-of-9 shooting in the first half, when the Spurs built a 59-47 lead. "Who, who struggled?" James asked. "I don't think I struggled. I was able to get my big man some shots, but they made shots." "I think containing LeBron was the key tonight," Parker said. "Last game against us he had 32 points. I think Bruce (Bowen) did a great job on defense. Bruce locked him down tonight." Manu Ginobili was a big reason for the cushion. He scored 16 of his 21 points in the first half for the Spurs (49-25), who won their third straight game and remained 1 1/2 games behind first-place Minnesota in the Midwest Division. "He's the reason we had the lead at the half," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "He was important to our offense in the first half." Ginobili had a pair of scintillating dunks, including one with 2:27 left in the first half that highlighted a 22-7 run to help the Spurs open a 55-38 lead. "It's been a long time since I've seen him dunk like that," Parker said. "He penetrated and went up and got high and a bit of help from the big man. It was so high and then he dunked it hard. It was a little impolite; it's not fair for the guy guarding him. It was just a nice, nice dunk." In the second quarter, Spurs made 14-of-21 shots. They shot 59 percent (26-of-44) in the half. Zydruna Ilgauskas added 18 points for Cleveland (32-41), which fell 1 1/2 games behind Boston for the Eastern Conference's final playoff berth. Cavaliers coach Paul Silas thought his young team needed to come out with more intensity against the defending NBA champions. "I think we could've been a little intimidated by them," Silas said. "This is the time of year where you have to have been there to know what it's all about. We don't know what it's about yet. They penetrated, rebounded ... you name it, they did it to us tonight, and we just got to learn, that's all." After James hit a jumper to pull the Cavaliers within 67-57 with 6:56 left in the third quarter, Parker made a running jumper and layup to ignite a 12-4 spurt. Ginobili's jumper with seven seconds left in the third quarter opened a commanding 86-65 lead. Tim Duncan added 18 points and Parker 14 for San Antonio, which shot 51 percent (44-of-86) and held a 45-33 rebounding advantage. With James and Ilgauskas on the bench, the Cavaliers outscored the Spurs 28-15 in the fourth quarter to make the final score respectable.
