Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Even without Pau Gasol, the Memphis Grizzlies showed why they are so tough in overtime. James Posey forced a second overtime with a deep 3-pointer at the buzzer and finished with a career-high 38 points as Memphis overcame a trio of key injuries to post a 136-133 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. Atlanta had a chance to put away the game at the end of the first overtime, but rookie Travis Hansen missed the first of two critical free throws with two seconds left. After a long inbounds pass from Shane Battier, Posey launched a clutch 30-footer that dropped in as time expired to tie the game at 122-122. "I told Shane I was going up the sideline and to hit me," said Posey, whose team won its sixth straight. "I saw a second was left on the clock and I was trying to give it a chance. (The shot) felt good, but a lot of shots do." In the second overtime, Posey scored seven points to eclipse his previous career high. Jason Williams drained a 3-pointer to give Memphis the lead for good, 133-131 with 26 seconds to go. Posey made two free throws for a 136-133 advantage with 10 seconds remaining and Atlanta's Bob Sura and Stephen Jackson missed 3-point attempts in the final seconds as the Grizzlies improved to 5-0 in overtime this season. "I just left it all out there, along with my team," said Posey, who was treated in the locker room for dehydration after the game. "I wanted to win for coach (Hubie) Brown. I just wanted to get the game." "Posey was an absolute monster," Brown said. "We just made some spectacular threes with the game on the line. All of them were in critical situations for us." Williams sent the game into the first extra session with a 3-pointer. The Grizzlies swung the ball around four times before Battier found Williams, who hit his shot from the right corner with five seconds left to tie the game, 107-107. "I saw Jason in the corner," Battier said. "I knew Jason was going to hit it. I had a sixth sense he was going to." The Grizzlies lost Gasol, their leading scorer and rebounder, to a right arch injury with 3:34 left in the second quarter. Forward Stromile Swift was unavailable down the stretch with a dislocated finger and guard Bonzi Wells was sidelined with a bad shoulder. "Hopefully, I will be able to recover," said Gasol, who scored 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting before the injury. "I won't try to force it." Memphis, which secured its first-ever postseason spot on Sunday, remained one game behind fourth-place San Antonio in the Western Conference. The Grizzlies snapped an eight-game skid in Atlanta. Sura had 23 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists for the Hawks, who were denied their season-high third win in a row. "We're just going out there and leaving it on the floor," said guard Jason Terry, one of six Hawks in double figures. "I've had guys on the other team asking me when are going to give up, but there was no give up tonight."
