Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Caron Butler is enjoying his best stretch of the season and so are the Miami Heat. Butler scored a season-high 30 points and grabbed a career-best 13 rebounds to lead the Heat to their ninth straight home win, 105-96 over the Chicago Bulls. With starting forward and leading rebounder Lamar Odom on the bench with a knee injury, Butler sparked the Heat to their eighth win in nine games. He made 10-of-19 shots, reached double figures for the seventh time in eight tries and shined on the defensive end. "That was fun out there," said Butler, who played on just three hours sleep following the birth of his third child and still finished just five points off a career high. "I was just trying to rebound and run the court, and everything just fell into place." "You don't see a 30-13 effort coming with anyone on any night," Miami coach Stan Van Gundy said. "That was phenomenal. His energy level was high. He just did everything you could ask of him." Without Odom, the Heat struggled at various points in the first three quarters. But they turned up the intensity on both ends and grabbed the lead for good, 87-86, on Brian Grant's jumper with 4:42 to play. Butler scored 12 points in the fourth quarter. He had 10 in the final 3 1/2 minutes and capped a 13-5 run with a pair of foul shots, making it 91-86 with 3:30 to play. Over three minutes after Grant's go-ahead basket, Rafer Alston sealed the win with a 3-pointer, making it 99-93. Miami won the game despite getting outrebounded, 50-35. The Heat made up for their struggles on the glass by scoring 26 points off 19 turnovers. "That was a helluva win for us," Van Gundy said. "We had trouble on the glass again, but when you force 19 turnovers and hold your opponent under 40 percent shooting, it's a good effort. "When you look at the fact that Lamar was out and yet we still got over the hump, that makes it one of the best wins we've had this year." Dwyane Wade, who a year ago recorded a triple-double to lead Marquette to the Final Four, added 21 points and seven assists for the Heat. Eddie Jones chipped in 18 points and Udonis Haslem, who started in place of Odom, had 12 and 10 rebounds, helping the Heat (36-38) move within one-half game of idle Milwaukee for fifth place in the Eastern Conference. Kirk Hinrich scored 20 points to lead the Bulls, who lost their fifth in a row. They took a 75-72 lead through 36 minutes but missed 11 of their final 12 shots. "We played harder tonight than we have the past few nights," Hinrich said. "But we faded a little bit mentally and Miami took advantage of that. Good teams do that on a consistent basis. They see a change to come back and make the most of it."
