Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The Indiana Pacers may be the best team in the Eastern Conference, but they still can't solve the Milwaukee Bucks. Joe Smith had a season high-tying 25 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks to lead the Bucks past the Pacers for the third straight time this season, 95-86. "Joe Smith played great, we had no answer for him," Indiana coach Rick Carlisle said. "We had a lot of guys guard him and he physically manhandled us all night. It was a demolition from start to finish." The Bucks are the only team in the Eastern Conference that the Pacers have not beaten. The teams play again in Indiana on Wednesday. "That's huge for us," Smith said. "They only have 20 losses, but three are to us. It lets us know how good a team we really are." "The good news is we get another shot at them tomorrow. The bad news is we get another shot at them tomorrow," Carlisle said. Milwaukee (37-37) moved into a tie with New Orleans for fourth place in the East. The top four teams receive home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. "There are eight games left and we're trying to come to grips with trying to get home-court advantage in the first round," Milwaukee coach Terry Porter said. "Every game is important for us at this stage of the season." The Bucks took control at the end of the first half by going on a 12-4 run and taking a 54-46 halftime lead. Their bench scored all 12 points and they never relinquished the lead thereafter. Smith has scored at least 20 points in four of the last five games, also scoring 25 on Sunday. He had nine in the fourth quarter and blocked a shot by All-Star forward Jermaine O'Neal with three minutes to play that preserved a six-point advantage. Brian Skinner added eight of his 12 points in the third quarter for Milwaukee, which played for the second consecutive night without forward Keith Van Horn. Van Horn is day-to-day with a sprained left ankle. "When you have starters in this league go down, it's important for someone else to step up and fortunately I've been able to do that," Smith said. "I feel good right now. My body's holding up and that allows me to be aggressive on both ends." O'Neal scored 20 points to lead the Pacers (54-20), who failed to lock up the best record in the East. Their magic number remains at one. The only other team Indiana has not beaten this season is Sacramento. "Tomorrow night is basically a must-win game to show ourselves, to show our fans and to show (the Bucks) that we can beat them," Indiana center Jeff Foster said. "They have had our number."
