Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks are in the playoffs. How far they go could depend on the contributions of their emerging rookies. Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash combined for 66 points and got help from rookies Josh Howard and Marquis Daniels in the fourth quarter as the Mavericks secured a playoff spot with a 126-109 win over the fading Cleveland Cavaliers. Dallas received a dominant performance from Nowitzki, who collected 35 points and a season-high 18 rebounds, while Nash had a season-high 31 points and 10 assists. But the Mavericks failed to pull away until their youngest players stepped up. Dallas had a 98-92 edge early in the fourth quarter before Daniels and Howard were involved in nearly every play of a 16-7 run. Daniels, who scored a career-high 31 points Friday, opened the spurt with a free throw before assisting on a dunk by Nowitzki. Nash buried a 3-pointer, Nowitzki sank a jumper and Howard took over, scoring seven of the final 10 points during the decisive stretch. Howard made a 3-pointer and - after a three-point play from Nash - capped the run with consecutive baskets to give the Mavericks a 114-99 cushion with just 4:41 remaining. "We're just doing what we've been doing all season long," Howard said of the rookie tandem. "We try to take advantage of the opportunities we get in games, like we've been doing all year. We're just going to have to keep doing it." Howard tied his season high with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting and Daniels finished with 17 points as Dallas (46-28) moved within two games of fifth-place Memphis in the Western Conference playoff race. "We've got to win them all if we want to make a little movement," Nowitzki said. "We still believe in each other and we're going for home-court advantage. That's big in the playoffs. We're going to try to make a climb." The Mavericks shot 54 percent (49-of-90) from the floor, including a season-high 6-of-10 from 3-point range. Nowitzki and Nash combined to shoot 25-of-40. "It seems like that is what is happening to us lately. Everybody just makes shots," Cleveland coach Paul Silas said. "I thought we played as well as we could play; we just couldn't stop them." Rookie LeBron James scored 28 points and Carlos Boozer collected 23 and 20 rebounds for the struggling Cavaliers (32-42), who lost for the sixth time in seven games. Cleveland fell two games behind eighth-place Boston for the final playoff spot in the East and is just one-half game ahead of Philadelphia. "We still think we can win enough games to make the playoffs," Boozer said. "We just played a really good team tonight." Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored 26 points on 10-of-13 shooting and the Cavaliers got an unexpected lift from Lee Nailon, who made 10-of-18 shots en route to a season-high 23 points in just his 14th game with Cleveland.
