Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Darius Miles responded to his coach's challenge with the best game of his career. Miles scored a career-high 31 points on 13-of-17 shooting, leading the Portland Trail Blazers to a 105-98 victory over the Boston Celtics. A surprise since being acquired from Cleveland in January, Miles scored 10 points in a 20-6 run in the third quarter that gave Portland the lead for good. "I said something to him at halftime," Trail Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks said. "I told him to extend himself a little bit more and he just happened to walk by as I was talking to one of the coaches. I just said, 'Extend yourself.' I didn't know he was going to extend himself like that." "(I wanted) to just step up and help us win the game and help take over the game," Miles said. "Coach called a (few) more plays for me. He was seeing I was really scoring a lot. It surprised when he called the first play (of the game) to go to me. He usually goes to Theo (Ratliff) on the first play, but he called the first play for me and since then, I was just aggressive." Zach Randolph added 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Trail Blazers (38-36), who remained one-half game behind Utah for the Western Conference's final playoff berth. Randolph scored 14 points in the second half and helped anchor a strong inside game. The Trail Blazers held a lopsided 64-34 advantage in points in the paint. "Darius really opened things up for me in the paint," Randolph said. "He was huge, creating from the wing, driving to basket and really taking a lot of pressure off me." Miles also drew praise from Celtics star Paul Pierce, who guarded him at times. "He is a born player," said Pierce, whose frustration boiled over in the fourth quarter when he picked up a technical foul. "(We) should have showed more respect for him. He is an improved player. He just really put it to me today." "I just really made him work on the defensive end, to get him tired on offense and it worked a little bit," Miles said. "He was kind of tired and winded." Ricky Davis netted 27 points and Pierce 23 for the Celtics (34-41), who had their lead for the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot reduced to 1 1/2 games over Cleveland. Celtics coach John Carroll was ejected with 20 second remaining after picking up his second technical foul. "We just played a very talented team tonight that was better than us and we didn't perform at a high enough level," Carroll said. "Any time you give up 105 points the way we did, in terms of letting a team shoot 61 percent, you know you can't win." Theo Ratliff added 14 points and Eddie Gill 11 for Portland, which shot 61 percent (45-of-74) and held a 44-30 rebounding advantage. Boston shot 45 percent (39-of-86).
