Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets finally played their first overtime game. Lucious Harris and Jason Collins made it worthwhile. Harris sank a pair of clinching free throws after a key controlling tip by Collins as the Nets rallied to defeat the Washington Wizards, 103-99, for just their second victory in eight games. Richard Jefferson collected 28 points and a season-best 14 rebounds, Harris added a season-high 24 points and Kerry Kittles 18 for the Nets, who were the only team in the NBA yet to play an overtime game this season. The Nets, who rallied from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime, held a 100-99 lead after a 3-pointer by Washington's Mitchell Butler with 18 seconds left in the extra session. Kittles was fouled a second later and made his first free throw before misfiring on his second attempt. The 7-foot Collins jumped over two Wizards to tip the ball to Harris, who was fouled and sank two free throws to open a four-point cushion with 13 seconds to go. Washington turned the ball over on its next possession, and New Jersey ran out the clock. "Coach (Lawrence) Frank has always told me, 'If you can't get it, tip it out to somebody who can," Collins said. "Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Lucious and Kerry back there and I knew I had a chance to get the ball. But I didn't want to risk over the back, so I just tipped it out to him and Lucious got it, held it and knocked down the free throws." New Jersey trailed by as many as 13 points and still was down, 88-78, after Washington's Larry Hughes split a pair of free throws with 6:47 remaining. But Harris sank two from the line to pull the Nets within 93-90 with 1:17 to play, and Kittles tied the game with a 3-pointer with 38 seconds left. Kittles blocked a 3-pointer by Butler on Washington's next possession, but after a timeout with 19 seconds remaining, Jefferson missed a tough leaner in the paint and Harris was well off on a desperation 3-pointer just before the buzzer. Gilbert Arenas scored 29 points and Hughes added 22 and a career-high 13 rebounds for the Wizards, who have lost 13 of their last 16 contests and were swept by the Nets for the first time. Washington was without the injured Kwame Brown (sprained left ankle) and Juan Dixon (sprained right ankle) and saw Jerry Stackhouse ejected late in the first quarter. "Nobody else can score for us," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said. "Nobody else can make a play for us, so that's where we are talent-wise." Stackhouse was handed a delay-of-game technical foul with 3:41 left in the opening period for slamming the ball down after being called for a loose-ball foul. He was ejected 25 seconds later for arguing with the officials while on the bench. "Jerry's a veteran, and he said what he had to say," Jordan said. "It wasn't the right thing to do, but he did it. It didn't affect the game." All-Star Nets forward Kenyon Martin, who had missed six games with right knee tendinitis, had four points in 12 minutes but sat out the second half with soreness in the knee. "It just didn't feel right out there once we started going up and down," Martin said. "The pain came back. That is what I wanted to see, just to give it a go. It felt great before the game and great when I first came in. Once I started going up and down, it started to ache, so I decided not to play in the second half."
