Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Kevin Garnett and Latrell Sprewell scored 27 points apiece as the Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the Seattle SuperSonics, 90-83, to a set a team record with their 52nd win. Garnett, who just missed a triple-double in his last game, also grabbed 10 rebounds. Every time he touched the ball in the final six minutes, the fans at the Target Center chanted "MVP." "It (52 wins) feels really good," Garnett said. "It's been a team effort. It's good to see progress, and it's good to see all of us contribute toward making it. It's another accomplishment for the organization." Minnesota (52-24), which won 51 games last season, moved 28 games over .500 for the first time in franchise history and remained 1 1/2 games ahead of second-place San Antonio in the Midwest Division. "We started 9-8 after 17 (games)," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "At that point, I didn't think 50 wins was coming. I think it means something that we've had the best record since December 1 (43-16)." The Timberwolves grabbed the lead for good, 47-46, on Trenton Hassell's free throw with 8:02 left in the third quarter. They opened their biggest advantage, 77-64, on Wally Szczerbiak's pair from the line with 5:01 remaining in the contest. The SuperSonics closed to 84-79 on Rashard Lewis' 3-pointer with 1:11 to go, but Sprewell answered with a 3-pointer with 51 seconds to play, ending Seattle's hopes. Sprewell, who made six 3-pointers, recorded his highest point total since scoring 31 points at Seattle on March 9. "He (Sprewell) just has to play us," Seattle guard Brent Barry said. "We're not on the schedule anymore, so if Spree goes into a slump, he could be in it for a long time. If he has anything to do with it, we might play them eight times next year." Seattle All-Star Ray Allen dished out 11 assists but was held to 13 points on 4-of-15 shooting. "It was a great effort defensively (on Allen)," Hassell said. "We helped each other. When he came around the pick-and-roll, we got on his hands. It was a good team effort on him tonight, as well as on Lewis." Vitaly Potapenko scored 18 points and Lewis added 17 for the SuperSonics (34-41), which fell 4 1/2 games out of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference with just seven remaining. "You've got to be playing playoff basketball right now," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "If you're not, you want to be close to it. That team (Minnesota) came out with that type of aggressiveness." Michael Olowokandi grabbed 11 rebounds off the bench, helping the Timberwolves to a 47-37 edge off the boards. Minnesota committed 19 turnovers that Seattle converted into 27 points, but the Timberwolves had a huge edge at the foul line. They made 21-of-31 free throws, compared to just 10-of-12 for the SuperSonics.
