Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks were too much for the Phoenix Suns. Nowitzki scored 34 points, including all nine in a third-quarter run, as the Mavericks pulled away for a 124-103 victory over the Suns, their fourth straight win. Nowitzki made 14-of-22 shots, including 3-of-7 3-pointers. He took over the game at the end of the third quarter, scoring every Dallas point in a 9-2 surge that lasted just over a minute and built the lead to 90-75. "I think that was big. We got a couple of steals and got into the open court," Nowitzki said. "When we do that, I think we're really tough to guard. We all can run and get open shots in transition." The Mavericks poured it on in the final period, continuing their offensive explosion with a small lineup featuring 6-9 Antoine Walker at center. During their winning streak, they are averaging a staggering 123.8 points per game. Antawn Jamison scored 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting in 27 minutes off the bench and Michael Finley added 20 points for Dallas, which shot a blistering season-high 61 percent (50-of-82). "The last couple of games we made a conscious effort to find the open guy," Nowitzki said. "With the smaller lineup, it's easier, because we have more shooters out there to move the ball to. On inbounds (plays), they have to respect a lot of shooters out there. The last couple of games have been fun." "Offensively, we've been scoring and defensively, we've been scrapping and doing all the things we need to do when we're smaller," Finley said. The Mavericks had 37 assists, including 14 by Steve Nash, who had a league season-high 19 in Thursday's 127-117 win over Sacramento. "It means we are making the extra pass, moving the ball," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "I wish we would have guarded a little better, but it wasn't bad. We could have held this team to under 100 points." Amare Stoudemire had 20 points and 13 rebounds and Shawn Marion scored 20 points for the Suns, who shot 44 percent (41-of-92) and simply could not keep pace with the high-powered Mavericks. Phoenix has lost 10 of its last 15 games. "We are just not 48-minutes ready to play this type of team yet," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni admitted. "They played really well. For us to win on the road, we would have to play super and I don't think we played super." Dallas (48-28), which moved within 1 1/2 games of fifth-place Memphis in the Western Conference, used a 10-2 run to open a 65-53 halftime lead. It has scored at least 60 points in the first half of every game during the streak. Walker had 11 points, nine rebounds and four assists. "Anytime you have Antoine Walker playing the 5 (center) and Mike Finley playing the 3 (small forward), that's a difficult matchup," Jamison said.
