Game StoryAUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Life was good for the Orlando Magic a year ago, when they held a 3-1 lead on the Detroit Pistons in the first round of the NBA playoffs. Since then, things have gone straight downhill for the Magic. They lost the last three games of that playoff series, and the struggles carried into this season. A 102-86 loss to the Pistons was their 11th straight defeat and it dropped them to a league-worst 19-59. "Fortunes change," said Orlando coach Johnny Davis, who was Doc Rivers' assistant last season. "We were there with the lead (in the playoffs) and didn't close it out. We've been trying to get back to that point ever since." The Pistons, meanwhile, have been going in the opposite direction. Detroit's win was its fifth straight and 51st overall, surpassing the 50 victories the team recorded a year ago. "I think they're very capable of winning the East and contending for the championship," Davis said. "They're as good a team as we've faced all year the way they're playing now. A month ago they weren't at this level, but with the addition of (Rasheed) Wallace, they're playing at a championship level." Magic center Andrew DeClercq said that the two Wallaces - Ben and Rasheed - will give nearly every team matchup problems. "They're such a good defensive team," DeClercq said. "They make you work for every shot. They've got two guys in the middle who are long, athletic and quick. They make you shoot high. And there's always somebody there to help. That allows the guards to put more pressure on the ball, and cause turnovers." The Pistons, who had 11 men play at least 12 minutes, were led by Rasheed Wallace, who had 17 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks. Ben Wallace and Tayshaun Prince each added 12 points. "I thought Rasheed was sensational tonight," Pistons coach Larry Brown said. "He rebounded and he defended. Ben was aggressive. It was fun. We did a lot of good things. They're just a very unselfish group, and hopefully we'll realize we have to play that way when we get into the playoffs. I hope every game goes like this - we win and everybody plays 20-something minutes. That would be my ideal." Detroit led, 59-45, at halftime after second-quarter runs of 17-6 and 10-2. In the first spurt, Darvin Ham came off the bench to score nine of his 11 points. "I just wanted to come off the bench and do well," Ham said. "In games like this at the end of the season it's tough. We're heading into the playoffs, and we're trying to grab any home-court advantage we can get. A lot of times, guys go into a lull, but we tried to stay up and polish our game a little bit." The Magic closed to 67-58 with 7:05 left in the third quarter after a pair of free throws by Juwan Howard, but the Pistons answered with an 11-1 run to lead by 19 points with just under four minutes left. Detroit's Chauncey Billups suffered a sprained left ankle when he stepped on Magic guard Tyronn Lue's foot during the first minute of the second half, and didn't return. "If this was Game Seven, I'd have been back out there," Billups said.
