Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- James Posey and the Memphis Grizzlies achieved yet another milestone. LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers appear miles away from a playoff berth. Posey scored 24 of his 35 points in the first half as the Grizzlies built a big lead and cruised to a 92-74 triumph over the reeling Cavaliers, reaching the 50-win plateau for the first time. Posey went 8-of-12 from the field and 15-of-18 from the line for Memphis (50-28), which moved one-half game ahead of Dallas (49-28) for fifth place in the Western Conference. "James Posey carried us," Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown said. "I'm happy for James Posey because he's professional, humble, hard-working and really gets it done under pressure. I couldn't be happier for him." The Grizzlies - who were missing the injurd Pau Gasol and Bonzi Wells and the suspended Jason Williams - never had won more than 28 games before this season, their second under Brown. "This is a special night for us," Brown said. "We asked for 41 wins, they got that early. We asked for playoffs and they got that early. We asked for 50 wins and they got that tonight." "He's got some good talent on that team from one to 11," Cleveland coach Paul Silas said of Brown. "A lot of guys play and they play the right way, so he's done a good job." The Cavaliers (32-46) have lost six in a row and 10 of 11. They are three games behind eighth-place Boston (35-43) in the Eastern Conference with four games remaining. Reserve Dajuan Wagner scored 18 points for Cleveland. James, the teenage rookie phenom, had just 14 on 4-of-11 shooting as he was guarded largely by Posey and Shane Battier. "We've got to stay focused and not get down on ourselves," James said. "I wouldn't say we've played bad basketball, but we haven't been as aggressive as usual." "I'm a big fan of LeBron James," Brown said. "He's a wonderful human being. He is so talented and I hope he continues to grow because he's the real deal." Cleveland, which lost to Toronto at home on a last-second 3-pointer by Jalen Rose on Tuesday, held a 10-9 lead midway through the first quarter before giving up 15 consecutive points. Posey scored 10 points to stake the Grizzlies to a 28-17 lead after the opening quarter and added 14 in the second period as they opened a 55-39 cushion. Cleveland got no closer than 10 points thereafter. "We were not only tired, but we just didn't play worth a damn, either," Silas said. "That's it, plain and simple. It's just tough to get it back." Both teams shot just 40 percent, but Memphis went 7-of-13 from the arc and Cleveland just 1-of-3. The Grizzlies also made 25-of-35 free throws while the Cavaliers sank 15-of-21. Cavaliers point guard Jeff McInnis, who returned from a sprained left ankle Tuesday, had five points and six assists in 24 minutes and sat out much of the second half. "We're not going to push it, for sure," Silas said. "He said (his ankle) was hurting. He tried to come out in the second half and he just didn't have it, so I decided to shut him down. Probably, he will not play the rest of the season, the four games. ... It's just not right, so why push it?"
