Game StoryNEW YORK (Ticker) -- The New York Knicks are back in the NBA playoffs for the first time in three years. Penny Hardaway scored 12 of his 21 points in the second quarter as the Knicks routed the Chicago Bulls, 96-82, ending their longest postseason drought in 16 years. The victory, coupled with Cleveland's loss at Memphis, clinched New York's first playoff berth since 2001, when it lost in the first round to Toronto. The Knicks had not missed the playoffs in consecutive years since 1985-87. "It's a great feeling for these guys and for the city," said Knicks president Isiah Thomas, who was hired during the season and made three trades to improve the roster. "They fought all year through the adversity and trades. I had a goal when I came in here and now that I've accomplished it, we can rest and refocus our minds on our opponent in the playoffs." Thomas was hired on December 22 to replace Scott Layden and immediately put his stamp on the team. His biggest move was acquiring Stephon Marbury and Hardaway from Phoenix on January 5. "This is what it's all about," Marbury said. "When I got traded here with Penny we had a goal to make the playoffs and we did. Now we have to focus on the second part of the season." The Knicks (37-42) moved 1 1/2 games ahead of the Boston Celtics (35-43) for seventh place in the Eastern Conference. "This is great for the city, staff and management," Hardaway said. "Now we want to make some noise in the playoffs." The Bulls led, 17-13, before the Knicks seized control by going on a 13-3 run that gave them a 26-20 advantage after one quarter. Chicago missed 12 of its last 13 shots in the period. Hardaway scored all of the Knicks' points in a 10-3 run midway through the second period. New York held a 54-37 halftime lead as it limited Chicago to 32 percent (12-of-37) from the floor. "I just had a lot of scoring opportunities tonight and took advantage of the smaller man guarding me (Kirk Hinrich)," Hardaway said. "I still have enough skills to score at will and I thank my teammates for looking for me when I was on a roll in the second quarter." The 21 points are the most Hardaway has scored with the Knicks this season. The lead grew to 70-42 with just over six minutes to go in the third quarter before the Bulls began to chip away, closing to 89-80 with 2:18 remaining in the contest but getting no closer. "I thought we played bad in the first half and the second half we became competitive, and by the time we started to play the way we were supposed to play it was too late," Chicago coach Scott Skiles said. "We were too soft. I expect a hard work's play for a day's pay." Eddy Curry scored 17 points on 7-of-21 shooting for the Bulls, who split the season series, 2-2. "If we would have showed all the heart we had in the fourth quarter at the start this game would have been different on the scoreboard," Curry said.
