Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Theo Ratliff swatted aside another opponent and the Portland Trail Blazers climbed another rung in the Western Conference playoff race. Ratliff had eight blocks, including two pivotal ones in the fourth quarter, to lift the Trail Blazers into a tie for eighth place in the West with an 87-81 victory over the Golden State Warriors. Portland (41-37) pulled into a three-way tie for eighth with Utah and Denver. The Trail Blazers have reached the playoffs 21 straight years, the Jazz have made it 20 in a row and the Nuggets have not been to the postseason since 1995. Portland blew a 13-point third-quarter lead and trailed, 69-66, with nine minutes to go after five straight points by former Trail Blazer Cliff Robinson. Ratliff turned away a shot by Troy Murphy to trigger a 7-0 run for Portland. "Theo's block on Troy was huge," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "That would have given them a five-point lead. Instead, we got the momentum back." The Warriors tied it for the last time at 77-77 with 3:28 left on a soaring follow dunk by Jason Richardson, who scored all 15 of his points in the second half. Zach Randolph, who scored 20 points, gave Portland the lead for good with two free throws and a hook shot. Ratliff went high to block a shot by Calbert Cheaney that turned into a breakaway dunk by Ruben Patterson that made it 83-77 with 2:06 left. Ratliff added another block of Speedy Claxton's drive with a minute to go. "I'm really trying to master the art of defense," Ratliff said. "Some players aspire to be like Michael Jordan or Magic Johnson. I want to be one of the best ever on the other end." "He alters a lot of shots and is playing with a ton of emotion," Richardson said. "He's finally playing for a winner and it shows." Darius Miles scored 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting for Portland, which was coming off Tuesday's spirited road win over the Los Angeles Lakers. "We didn't want to have another episode of last Saturday (a home loss to New Orleans)," Miles said. "We can't afford to have any letdowns anymore." "A win is a win right now," said Ratliff, who had just four points but 13 rebounds. "But after beating LA, we didn't want to come out here and lay an egg." Richardson and Robinson were held scoreless in the first half as the Warriors fell behind, 44-32. But they scored all 27 points for Golden State in the third quarter. Robinson scored 16 of his 23 points in the period, pacing a 16-2 run that carried into the final period and gave the Warriors the lead. "I just tried to shake off a bad first half and give our team a chance," Robinson said. Richardson had 12 rebounds and Murphy and Adonal Foyle swept 10 apiece for Golden State, which held a 49-36 advantage on the glass despite playing without injured center Erick Dampier, one of the best rebounders in the NBA. The Warriors won their previous visit to Portland as Dampier grabbed 21 rebounds. "We played hard and the effort was there," said coach Eric Musselman, whose team had won 10 of its last 12 games. "Theo was very active inside and he gives them something they've been missing, hustle and resilience."
