Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks had scored at least 118 points in each of their previous six games. The Utah Jazz prevented the streak from reaching seven, but it did not matter. Dirk Nowitzki scored 27 points as the Mavericks extended their winning streak to six games and dealt a blow to the Jazz's playoff push with a 117-94 triumph. Antawn Jamison added 25 points for Dallas (50-28), which moved into a tie with Memphis for fifth place in the Western Conference. The Mavericks had six players reach double figures and shot 53 percent (41-of-77) in improving its NBA-best home mark to 35-5. Raja Bell scored 18 points and fellow reserve Maurice Williams added 17 for the Jazz (41-38), who slipped one-half game behind Denver and Portland (41-37) for the final playoff berth in the West. Antoine Walker had 10 points, Nowitzki added nine and Michael Finley eight in the first quarter, helping Dallas open a 35-18 advantage. "They did a terrific job," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "They came at us and put everything they had into it. They got us in the first quarter, and with a team like we have, we could never get anything going." The Mavericks, who never trailed, allowed the Jazz to score the final 12 points of the half to pull within 62-47. But Utah got no closer than 14 points after the break. "We were very competitive, they just shot the ball," said Bell, whose team shot 49 percent (36-of-73). "I can't imagine they were shooting any less than 60 percent at the half. I don't think we played great, but I don't think you can say that we didn't compete." "We got into a situation where we wanted to play a little bit like they did, take quick shots," Sloan said. "Then we missed a couple of shots early and we panicked. When you get a young team and they panic, it's hard to get them back." During their winning streak, the Mavericks have been using a smaller lineup, one that has the 6-9 Walker seeing time at center. "Right now, we're putting a lot of teams in a bind and we're just running," Walker said. "We're getting up and down the floor and we're making things a lot easier for ourselves. We're forcing teams to play small lineups." "The smaller lineup really makes it easier on our offense," Nowitzki added. "We try to break our own man down and make plays. The small lineup lets us put a lot of good players out there. When we rebound with the small lineup, I think we're in good shape." The Mavericks were extremely sharp with the ball, committing just five turnovers, which the Jazz turned into a paltry three points. Dallas scored 22 points off 15 Utah giveaways. "That's actually amazing that we take care of the ball so well," Nowitzki said. "That's what Nellie (Dallas coach Don Nelson) wants. We want to get a chance to get a shot up. Every time we've got someone to shoot it up there. Even though we push the ball a lot, we've got great ballhandlers out there that take care of the ball."
