Game StoryLOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal and the Los Angeles Lakers are back in the race atop the Western Conference. Bryant scored 33 points and O'Neal added 28 as the Lakers rallied from a 19-point first-half deficit for a 103-95 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. After winning a season-high 11 straight games to take over the top spot in the West, the Lakers absorbed back-to-back home losses to San Antonio and Portland that knocked them back to third and had coach Phil Jackson questioning their commitment. That approach appeared to continue as the Lakers fell into a 43-24 hole midway through the second quarter. But they closed to 55-48 at halftime, took a 74-72 lead after three quarters and never trailed in the final period. "You just have to figure out a way to win the game," Bryant said. "When you are down 19 points you can walk around with your head down and give up on your game, or you can just say we pretty much have them right where we want them." "We got down 19 early on but we were able to make a push in the second half and right now that is the kind of win we need," said Lakers forward Karl Malone, who scored 12 points. "Tonight we had all the makings of the last couple of games we have played but we bounced back and got the win. We needed that really bad." Bryant scored 12 points in the second quarter and sparked a rally with his defense. O'Neal scored 11 points in the final period as he overpowered Grizzlies centers Jake Tsakalidis and Lorenzen Wright. "Our defense bailed us out," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "That's why we got ourselves back in stride a little bit. We came back and played a good second half." After helping themselves, the Lakers (54-25) got some help from the Phoenix Suns, who beat Sacramento to create a tie atop the Pacific Division. The Kings host the Lakers on Sunday. San Antonio also is 54-25, leaving all three teams 1 1/2 games behind Minnesota in the race for the best record in the West. Mike Miller scored 22 points and Wright added 21 and 10 rebounds for the Grizzlies (50-29), who fell one-half game behind Dallas into sixth place in the West. Memphis made just 11-of-22 free throws while Los Angeles sank 31-of-42, including 14-of-15 by Bryant. "We just let them get a lot of easy shots and sent them to the free-throw line too many times," Miller said. "It was a lot of experience gained tonight, just like a playoff game." The Grizzlies bolted to a 31-19 lead after one quarter behind 10 points from Miller. The advantage ballooned to 43-24 at the 7:30 mark of the second period after a pair of steals and baskets by Bo Outlaw. But things fell apart thereafter as Bryant and O'Neal took over. The Grizzlies still were within 89-85 after a basket by Wright with 5:16 remaining but made just 3-of-6 free throws over the next three minutes. "As poorly as we played the second half ... if we make five more free throws it's a nail biter," Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown said.
