Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- New York Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens rested Stephon Marbury and most of his starters in the fourth quarter and overtime and still came away with a victory. Subbing for Marbury down the stretch, Frank Williams put the New York Knicks ahead for good with a pair of free throws with 14.5 seconds left in a 102-98 victory over the Washington Wizards. The Knicks (37-42) already had sealed seventh place in the Eastern Conference earlier Saturday when Boston lost at Atlanta. They still can catch New Orleans for sixth. But playoff positioning did not seem that important to Wilkens, who played star point guard Marbury just 22 minutes and power forward Kurt Thomas 24 minutes. Penny Hardaway did not play at all due to a stomach virus. "We're still trying to win, but we'll cut back on some minutes," Wilkens said. "I really wanted the bench to play and I liked what I saw." DerMarr Johnson, a Washington native, and rookie Michael Sweetney, a Georgetown alumnus, played especially well. Johnson had a season-high 22 points in 24 minutes and Sweetney set season highs with 15 points and 12 rebounds. "Me and Mike got an opportunity and that's what we need," Johnson said. "He (Wilkens) gave the young guys a chance to get out there and play." "With more minutes, the more I learn, the more help I will be out there on the court," Sweetney said. But it helped the Knicks that Wizards coach Eddie Jordan decided to go with backup guards Juan Dixon and Steve Blake instead of starters Gilbert Arenas and Larry Hughes for most of the fourth quarter and the entire overtime. With the game tied at 87-87, Dixon had a chance to win it in regulation but missed a runner in the lane with three seconds left. "I just thought that Steve and Juan were going well for us," Jordan said. "Larry and Gilbert played a lot of minutes last night (a win at Philadelphia), so I wanted to see if we could win the game with the two young guys." In overtime, Dixon tied the game at 96-96 with a short jumper with 36 seconds left but fouled Williams, who made both free throws. After a 3-pointer by Blake rattled in and out, Moochie Norris and Johnson each hit a pair of free throws for the Knicks, who are 2-5 in overtime this season, with both wins against Washington. Rookie Jarvis Hayes scored a season-high 23 points for the Wizards.
