Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Don Nelson could barely stomach the latest road disaster from his defensively challenged Dallas Mavericks, especially with two of his top players who caused the most pain. With Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash combining to shoot 5-of-25 from the field, the Mavericks looked like anything but a playoff team in a 119-99 loss to the Seattle SuperSonics. The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for Dallas, which slipped to 15-24 on the road, where they will begin a first-round Western Conference playoff series. The Mavericks (50-29) are tied with Memphis for fifth place and can finish no higher than that. "My two best players were my worst two players tonight," Nelson said. "I might as well have given them the day off like I did with (Michael) Finley and have the whole big three not show up. We probably would have had a better shot to win." Not having home-court advantage could spell a quick elimination for Dallas, which reached the Western Conference finals last year and was hoping to use this game and Sunday's contest at Golden State as road confidence-builders to take into the playoffs. "I thought it was good that we had three of our last four games on the road because we have a lot to prove," said Antoine Walker, who played center in Nelson's small lineup. "But we didn't prove anything today. We missed shots early and kind of got down on ourselves. They controlled the game pretty much from start to finish." Rookie Marquis Daniels was the lone bright spot for Dallas, picking up the slack for the injured Finley (back spasms) and scoring a season-high 33 points on 14-of-18 shooting The Sonics are headed to the lottery for a second straight year and had lost their three previous meetings with Dallas. But they dominated this game, shooting a season-high 59 percent (51-of-87) and converting 13 3-pointers. "I thought the guys came out and pushed the ball, shared the ball, defended the ball and made it a fun day in this building," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. Rashard Lewis led six Sonics in double figures with 25 points on 11-of-15 shooting. Brent Barry scored 18 points and rookie Luke Ridnour outplayed Nash in just his fourth start of the season. "Coach McMillan just told me to go out and play and have fun," said Ridnour, who had 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting and a season-high 13 assists. "We were able to get out and run and I just wanted to make the most of the chances I got." Seattle shot nearly 70 percent in the second quarter, making 16-of-23 shots, to open a 66-46 halftime lead. Meanwhile, Nowitzki made just 1-of-10 shots in the first half and Nash did not score his first basket until just 5:55 remained in the game. Nowitzi scored 10 points on 3-of-15 shooting and Nash just four on 2-of-10. "I had great looks, it's just that some nights nothing will drop," Nowitzki said. "We didn't get any bounces and they got all the bounces. They were more aggressive than we were and usually the aggressor gets the bounces."
