Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Resting their starting backcourt did not prevent the Houston Rockets from clinching seventh place in the Western Conference. Mark Jackson scored a season-high 25 points and Jimmy Jackson added 22 as Houston wrapped up the seventh seed with a 111-107 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics. Signed as a free agent on January 15, Mark Jackson replaced injured point guard Steve Francis and made his second start in 41 games. "It's been a long time," said Mark Jackson, who was averaging just 1.9 points. "I do whatever is asked of me. I just stepped up and did what was asked of me." "That's just veteran leadership," Jimmy Jackson added. "He's played in this league and done some phenomenal things. And that's because he understands how to play the game, and when the time was called upon him to step up and play a big role, he stepped right into that position and performed." Houston (45-36) never trailed but nearly let a 20-point lead slip away. The Rockets took an 84-64 lead with 3:22 left in the third quarter and still had a 96-87 advantage with 5:11 left in the fourth. "I saw some good and I saw some not so good," Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "Our readiness to start the game and our readiness to start the third quarter was critical. Our guys did a good job." Seattle climbed within 105-103 with 12 seconds remaining on a 3-pointer by Vladimir Radmanovic. The Sonics used a barrage of 3-pointers to climb back into it during a 35-point fourth quarter. "We needed ball movement and more movement in our offense," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "We were standing and watching guys too much. This is a very good team if you allow those guys to stand and clog up the ball." Mark Jackson, 39, made 4-of-8 shots, including 3-of-7 from the arc. He also dished out nine assists and made 14-of-17 free throws, including four in the final 12 seconds. Jimmy Jackson, who normally starts at forward, filled in for ailing shooting guard Cuttino Mobley (shoulder). He scored 18 points in the first quarter, when Houston grabbed a 34-25 lead. Six Rockets reached double figures, including Scott Padgett and Bostjan Nachbar, whogot rare starts. Padgett scored 12 points and Nachbar chipped in 11, making a clutch 3-pointer with 12.8 seconds left that helped turn back the SuperSonics' comeback. "Winning on the road in Seattle is good," Van Gundy said. "I just liked the way we played tonight with much more competitive spirit." Ronald Murray scored 24 points for Seattle, which won the previous three meetings with the Rockets and was trying to sweep the season series for the first time since 1995-96.
