Game StoryHOUSTON (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks achieved everything coach Don Nelson wanted Wednesday night in its regular-season finale at Houston. Rookie Marquis Daniels led the way with 21 points, eight rebounds and seven assists as the Mavericks posted a 92-89 victory over the Houston Rockets. The game had no impact on each team's playoff position with Dallas locked in at fifth and Houston seventh. Their opponents were determined over an hour later when Sacramento lost at Golden State and the Los Angeles Lakers defeated Portland. Houston (45-37) will take on the second-seeded Lakers and Dallas (52-30) will meet the fourth-seeded Kings. Nelson wanted to get significant minutes for Michael Finley, Daniels and Tony Delk and win the game. He accomplished his mission. "I'm in love with Marquis," Nelson said. "I think he's sensational." Daniels made the Mavericks as an undrafted free agent out of Auburn. He topped the 20-point plateau for the fourth straight game. "It made me hungry, made me want it even more," Daniels said about not being drafted. "It was a blessing. A lot of people told me to stay patient, stay ready." Daniels played for Dallas' team in the Summer Pro League and in the Rocky Mountain Review, averaging 18.3 points, then made the Mavericks in camp. "I'm just taking advantage of the situation right now," he said. "I wasn't really shocked (I've played this well). I knew I could do it the whole time." Finley scored only nine points with one rebound and one assist in Tuesday's win over Memphis. He collected 16 points and seven rebounds in 42 minutes. "I wanted to get a lot of minutes for Mike so he could get that bad game out of his system," Nelson said. "He certainly did that." Delk spent two stints on the disabled list with a sprained left ankle, missing 56 games. He played Wednesday for the first time since March 3 in an effort to make the playoff roster and responded with five points and two assists in 19 minutes. Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy didn't think his team accomplished much Wednesday. "It could have been a gain, but we didn't gain much because we didn't play well," he said. "It's not a positive or negative."
