Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Chris Bosh and Rafer Alston made Sam Mitchell's debut as Toronto Raptors coach a successful one. Bosh scored 20 points and Alston contributed 15, seven rebounds and eight assists as the Raptors posted a 95-88 victory over the Houston Rockets. The Raptors got the sellout crowd at Air Canada Centre into the game early with a 17-4 run. Toronto used another big spurt to close the first half, outscoring Houston, 24-7, to take a 52-39 lead into the locker room. "I was very impressed with the way we started," Alston said. "I think every shot we put up early went in. It was a great way to get our confidence up in the game and put the pressure on them." Yao Ming and former Raptor Tracy McGrady combined to score 38 points for Houston (0-2) but never seemed in sync. Yao picked up two quick fouls and scored only four of his 17 points in the first half. McGrady led the Rockets with 21 points but had only seven after the break. "Just because T-Mac and Yao are two up-and-coming superstars in the league doesn't necessarily mean we're going to win every game," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "It's going to be tough," McGrady added. "We're still trying to feel each other out." Alston, an offseason signing in his second stint as a Raptor, added 15 points and seemed to be in the middle of every big play by Toronto. With just under three minutes left, he stripped Yao after an offensive rebound and found Donyell Marshall for a hoop on the ensuing possession for an 88-80 lead. "Rafer is a hungry player, he just wants to play," Bosh said. "I love Rafer and his love for the game. When we're down, he let's us know that we've got to pick it up. He was into it tonight." Houston was able to battle back from Toronto's initial burst and went on an 8-0 run to close out the first quarter and pull within 19-18 as Yao sat on the bench with two fouls. The Rockets were unable to build off that momentum in the second period, and Van Gundy said the two key runs by the Raptors hurt his team. "You can lose a game in many places and we lost the game in many places. Getting blown out early, making a run back and then getting hammered again right before the half," Van Gundy said. "We're not guarding, we're not rebounding, missing free throws, not taking care of the ball and not much more." Jalen Rose made 10-of-10 free throws and scored 17 points and Vince Carter put a tumultuous offseason behind him with 16 for Toronto. Carter, who asked for a trade in the offseason, was ordered Tuesday to pay his imprisoned ex-agent William "Tank" Black nearly $4.7 million in lost commissions and damages. "I'm disappointed, that's all I can tell you. I'm not allowed to talk about it," Carter said. "I'm just glad we won tonight."
