Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Paul Pierce took out his frustration on the New York Knicks. Pierce scored 14 of his 28 points in the third quarter as the Boston Celtics notched their first win of the season, a 107-73 rout of the Knicks. On Friday, Pierce was held to 15 points on 5-of-14 shooting by NBA Defensive Player of the Year Ron Artest in a 100-94 loss to Indiana. The All-Star swingman bounced back by making 10-of-18 shots, grabbing 10 rebounds and handing out eight assists. He had been just 15-for-37 from the field over Boston's first two games - both home losses in which it blew fourth-quarter leads. Pierce, who suffered a cracked tooth in the second quarter, felt it essential to prevent the Celtics from falling to 0-3 early in the season. "We played with a little better sense of urgency today," he said. "Our back was against the wall and we really don't want go down 0-3 against a divisional rival and I took care of business. The last two games we really should have won and I think today we really came together." Pierce had 14 points by halftime as Boston built a 55-36 advantage. He was 4-of-5 from the field in the third quarter as the Celtics made 10-of-14 shots and opened a 31-point lead entering the final period. "Anytime someone gets hot like that, you try to get the ball out of hands," Knicks forward Tim Thomas said. "They did a great job of running him off screens and he did what he does best, which is shooting the ball." Ricky Davis added 20 points for Boston, making 8-of-11 shots. Reserve Marcus Banks chipped in 10 points. Mike Sweetney scored a career-high 18 points off the bench for New York (0-2), which was handed its worst loss in a home opener and booed throughout by the sellout crowd. "We wanted to get a win in the home opener," said Knicks guard Jamal Crawford, who was held to 11 points. "It just didn't happen for us tonight. It was almost like a bad dream. It didn't seem real." In addition to his big night on offense, Pierce also helped the Celtics to an overwhelming 45-31 advantage on the boards. "I thought team rebounding was the key of the game for us," said Boston coach Doc Rivers, whose team was outrebounded, 52-31, in the loss to Indiana. "Pierce, Jiri (Welsch) and everybody was in on the glass. "I told them before the game that it was not the big man's job to rebound, it's everybody's job. We are not just a team that can say, 'Ben Wallace, get us 15 to 20.' Everyone has to do it and we did it." Boston closed the first half with a 13-0 run and scored the first 12 points in the third quarter. Pierce had seven in the second spurt, with his 15-footer pushing Boston's lead to 65-38 with 9:13 remaining in the period. Boston, which rested its starters for a good portion of the fourth quarter, shot 56 percent (43-of-77), including 6-of-11 from 3-point range.
